Apple Maps has now reached deplorable status. Google Earth responds faster...

Well at least that's the case on my 5s. Opening the app in regular mode causes it to freeze on this screen:



And then only after you leave the app for like a minute does it start working.

I zoom in and only see jagged polygons representing major thoroughfares and not smooth lines and local streets. What happened???

Whereas in Google Earth now it seems I can just open it and go wherever.

It's pretty sad because in iOS 9 I never opened Earth or Google Maps because Apple Maps just worked the way it was supposed to. I think I might be ditching Maps is this continues. Anybody else having similar issues?

Have you tried restarting your phone? Maybe reset all settings. The only time that has happened to me is if I've had a really poor wifi or cellular connection.

Maps in iOS 10 are a bit slower to load compared to iOS 9 (more functionality to feed), but in your case it sounds like a connectivity issue. I sometimes get this empty grid in Maps when I open them in places with poor cellular data. No issues if I am in a 3G or better zone, however.

Agreed. Also the OP is on low power mode, which could simply be causing the issues in the first place.

No. A low power mode isn't supposed to freeze the whole UI
