Apple Maps or Google maps for offline map data/directions?

I am planning to travel and will have limited internet access there and I want to download some offline directions, meaning that I can have my directions and map data like streets and such stored locally offline on my iPhone.

Is this possible with the native Apple Maps? Or, will I have to use Google Maps for this?
Is Google Maps better than the native Apple Map?

I also wish to have only ONE map app on my phone as opposed to having two.
So in that case, which one is more preferred to use overall?

Well, Google Maps have offline maps for 30 days. Apple is light years behind without any cache ability (only works till you reboot, close maps app).
For full offline mode you might try Open Street Maps in Maps.ME app for instance.

Google Maps offline areas has always worked for me when traveling to less than optimal coverage areas. I use it with my local area, also, as you never know when you're going to hit a dead zone.

That (Maps.me) or Navmii (costs some money to download maps per country).
The limitation with Google Maps is that it's only a part of a country/region and that it's only available for 30 days.

With Google Maps you only download the areas that you need. The maps you download can be set to update automatically as shown below, which is not quite "only available for 30 days".

I still think it's too much hassle for either go into the app and have it automatically updated or run in the background to have it updated. I don't use offline daily but when I want to use it without access to WIFI I don't want to run into a problem that the 30 days is over and the app or I forgot to sync/update on WIFI/3G. It's also areas not complete countries can you?

Google site says:
"Offline areas that you downloaded on your phone or tablet need to be updated at least every 30 days. When your offline areas expire in 15 days or less, Google Maps will try to update the area automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi."

I rather prefer to download maps now from e.g. the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany (regions or complete country) and store these offline. Yes it costs some local storage but you can always use it on your iDevice.

I use Maps.me and Sygic - both work great and it's easy to download large areas (states, countries) as needed.

I would recommend the app Here WeGo, since you can download entire country maps for offline use:
