Today a van with Apple Maps by Apple on the side and back drove by. Holy cameras. It had at least 15 cameras and a huge GPS dome on it. It had California tags. I am near Wilmington NC. Guess they are going to do their own version of street view soon. Kinda cool to see.

Street view...and data gathering for autonomous vehicles.

Had one on our street in rural Connecticut last year. They are definitely collecting the data from all the places! Hopefully they can figure out that my neighbor's driveway is not my street!

Saw one around Portland Maine a month or so ago. Saw it several times in different parts of the general Portland area and suburbs

How do you see the street view data? I poked around in parts of the Bay Area where Apple supposedly has the new map data but can't find a way to do street view.

Apple Maps doesn't have a "Street View". They have been buying map data from a variety of venders and stitching it together to make Apple Maps. They have decided to go out and physically map and gather their own data for Apple Maps. Since they are doing this (like Goggle does) they could in theory offer a "Street View" in the future. But it would likely be a few years if ever.

...but it is definitely coming.

What info is this based on?

It’s pretty common knowledge that the Lidar info they are collecting will allow them to tKe the current flyover information and seamlessly integrate it into the ground data already collected by their vans as well as the imaging they already had from the flyover company they purchased.

Instead of the awkward “stretchy” street view photos Google utilizes, Apple will have seamless imagery from the sky all the way down to street level and even into buildings.

And my guess that the “street view” info will be available within the next 6-12 months (if not limited starting this month) based on the info already leaked about the automated software removing/blurring faces, license plates and reading street signs as part of the new Maps initiative.

It is “definitely” coming and I’m “guessing” on the exact timing...I think that was pretty clear.
Speculation no matter how well researched or plausible it seems is not the same as definitely. Definitely is factually known.

I’m only speculating on the timing. Street view is “definitely” coming.

The company that created flyover already had street view started. Apple just needed their own vans to collect the additional Lidar data to create the immersive imagery that blows away Google’s “pictures.”

I would find the original article on here, but it’s years old...when they first announced the acquisition of the flyover purchase. It showed examples and even the interior view of museums, malls, etc.
