Apple Map

I apologise for disturbing you and possibly missing the obvious. Apple Map does not open with a map, but with a squared only screen with a pointer within it. It is like a buoy in an ocean and just as useful. I am bang up to date on MACOS. There is 8 Gb memory on a bog standard Apple Air (Intel). What am I doing wrong, please? - Paul.
