In the settings of DNDWD is this note:

“Your contacts will receive this message when they text you, and may break through Do Not Disturb by sending “urgent" as an additional message.”

I don’t want this notice sent/appended to my customized reply. Yet, AFAIK, there is no way to disable it.
To make matters worse, what is actually sent is not the above note (as claimed), but rather, the following (awkwardly constructed sentence):

(I’m not receiving notifications. If this is urgent, reply “urgent” to send a notification through with your original message.)

So not only is a text sent that is against my wishes, it poorly written/constructed.

Other that not using DNDWD, is there a solution for this issue?

Set auto-rely to “No one” under do not disturb settings.

Not sure I understand...

I still want everyone to get my message, but no one to get Apple's post script. Are you saying this does that?
Correct. This setting turns off the auto-reply Apple message.

Chazzle,

Many thanks! Indeed your patience with me is laudable.

For sure, I find Apple’s approach counter-intuitive, e.g., when I set Auto-Reply to “no one”, then my custom auto-reply message disappears. And even though I can no longer see it, it is still sent? To me that is/would be most unusual…

Chazzie,

When I tried doing as you suggested, e.g., turning off Auto-Reply to no-one, then DNDWD does not work at all. It is only when I set Auto Reply to Favorites that it works as divined. And then the cursed Apple addendum re breaking through is included.

What doesn't work at all when you do that? You get notifications as you normally do as if DNDWD isn't enabled?

I’m a little confused now as to what you’d like DNDWD to do for you. This feature has no effect on outgoing messages. Rather, it blocks your notifications while you are driving. If you have the Auto-Reply setting turned on, then not only does it prevent you from seeing an incoming call or text, but automatically will text the sender with a message explaining that you are driving (either custom message that you set or Apple’s default).

OP is looking to send the auto-reply to people, but NOT send the automatic "reply with urgent to bypass" message.

You can't do that. All or nothing when allowing auto-reply. Message sender will get both auto-reply messages/texts.

I get the design decision: if you have deemed the sender to be that important that you need to auto-reply re: can't reply now, needs to be a way to break through for true emergencies. Example: you are on the highway making 1hr+ drive.

Similar philosophy to regular DND and the repeated calls to override.

What I want is only my custom message(in blue) to be sent:
"I’m driving with my “Do Not Disturb While Driving” turned on.

Thus, I won’t see your message until I get to my destination, but please be assured I will promptly respond when I do.

Thanks!"

I do not want Apple's appended note (in red) to be sent:
(I’m not receiving notifications. If this is urgent, reply “urgent” to send a notification through with your original message.)

And so far, if the former is sent, the later is always appended.

Does that help clarify my problem?

So far, it doesn't appear that there's an option to send only your message without the additional part about how things can be bypassed. It's either your message with the bypass message, or no message at all.

NoBoMac-

I think you got it! And thanks for helping explain the rationale for what is being done. I don't concur with the approach Apple has taken, but at least I understand it.

Sadly, as was just pointed out, you can't do that.

I changed the message I'm capable of changing to the "hand held up to say 'stop'" emoji since it's as close as you can get to removing the editable message. You can't select the predefined editable message and delete it -- trying to just restores it.
