I have a feeling Apple will use the iOS AppleTV app store to enter the console gaming scene just as the iPod touch has locked them into portable gaming. Think about how cool it'd be to have a peripheral that attached to iPods and iPhones to make them a gaming controller with a display. I drool for the future

This has been discussed to death and is rather unlikely.

Unlikely? Oh yes based on your heavy inside knowledge of one of the most secretive companies in Silicon Valley? Cut the condescension. If you're not interested in the topic then go discuss something else. Discussed to death? Why don't you go chat about a Verizon iPhone. When you're talking about "Apple", there isn't really much that hasn't been discussed to death.

I still see it as a plausible scenario. They've already indicated with GameCenter that they want to enter the gaming world more aggressively, even touting their gaming figures at keynotes.

I don't think they'd want to join an already very competitive market place.

They've been here before and weren't successful.

Well that's no reason to not try again. They tried the phone market once before the iPhone too, remember?
The gaming industry of today is not at all the same as it was back then. On-Demand downloadable game content is gaining momentum, and Apple would be the perfect candidate to show casual gamers the benefits of that market strategy.

If they open it up with an App Store, then it's not even in Apple's hands any more. It's up to developers to come up with innovative ideas, and if they do, there is no way Apple would refuse their entry into the Apple TV's app catalogue.

I think their venture into gaming will be as a result of letting devs make A-TV apps.. I think it's just going to happen regardless...

when did they ever try to get into the mobile phone market before the iphone????

I am happy for them to stay away from gaming consoles and just work with Sony to deliver better integration from my mac to PS3 and to my PSP

Doubtful, but if it does, I wouldn't use it.

If I'm going to spend money on a console, I want something I can play serious games on. That's why the Wii is a terrible console, but granted, it's successful. So maybe Apple has a chance to port iOS games over, which are preferably better suited to a touch device, but it still wouldn't warrant a purchase.

The magic touch pad does kind of make one wonder .... it addresses the issue of how an atv would play games.

Though games would have to be specifically developed for the new atv. The pixelation would be atrocious otherwise on a 50" tv at the iphone and even iPad res.

Have you ever actually played games besides waggle games? I have a Wii, PS3, and an XBOX 360, and I play the Wii more than any other system because of excellent games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and the various Virtual Console titles which are great for storing my entire collection of classic games digitally.

I love my XBOX360, but I have way more fun on the Wii, and I've been a hardcore gamer for over 20 years.

I'm not saying you HAVE to agree, but I always get a bit irritated when people spew their opinions while asserting them as fact.

I totally agree with you! Apple already has entered the game market. It just makes sense that they'd want to expand their iTunes gold mine to as many places as possible. Why not the living room? The other iDevices are already hugely successful in selling games, but one thing to keep in mind is who they're selling to. They're not selling to the hardcore gamers out there, but people who are more casual about the whole thing. If their device can play iTunes content, run apps like Facebook and Twitter, play games, and download any of the above easily and quickly, I think it could be very popular. They wouldn't sell it to people who want or need a dedicated gaming device. Instead, their market would be the same types of people who found the iPhone and iPod touch to be fun little devices to play games on here and there, and who would never buy a dedicated console otherwise. I think it'd be cool to see what the App Store developers could do with this.

I have to say, if this is possible Apple have to commit to a long term, stable platform.

Look at the consoles today, they have 5-6+ year lifespans.

They can't try and make people buy annual upgrades like they do with the iPhones, the console market just does not work like that.

The iTV will have to be powerful enough to last at least 3 or 4 years.

This is not necessarily true. The gaming consoles currently have a lifespan much greater than in the past not because of powerful hardware, but because of update-able software. The iPhone is released in a new iteration every year, but the apps, for the most part, are cross-iPhone compatible, which is not typically the case with current home consoles.

I don't think initially it will be a direct XBOX competitor. I do, however, think this will slowly bridge the gap between Apple and Gaming, and will open up the possibility of including casual gaming in with movies, TV, and music in the iTunes catalog

The new AppleTV will obviously include games.

People would have to use their iPhones/Touch's for a controller - sort of expensive....

Unless Apple decides to update their Remote to include more buttons for gaming - or make their own controller.

Could happen, they did come out with their own rechargeable batteries... ;)

If the Apple TV is going to compete with video game consoles, it's only going to compete with the Wii and the XBox Live Marketplace/PSN; casual crowd. They can't deliver the necessary hardware to compete with the XBox 360/PS3 graphically and still market the Apple TV at a decent price; it needs to hit $99.

Exactly. Games on the iTV would be a bonus, not a main focal point. And judging by the success of small-device iOS games so far, it looks like they'd still be a strong force in the casual gaming market.

Lol yeah I can already hear the fanboys defending the apple game console being a generation behind on technology at a premium price. "Sure it doesn't have HDMI, 1080p, or blu-ray but it has great design and its made of aluminum, if they add the ability to play video games in the next generation I'll buy that one too."

Thank you very much for this thread. I see Apple doing this in the near future, Right now in the present they only have apps for portable devices but I think it's time for these apps to come to the big screen, and for iOS to come to the big screen as well, the only problem, what will we control iOS and the games with? The "Magic Controller"? It seems likely to do this, it isn't the first gaming console they did.
