3 is 2, 2 is 1, 1 is none. I’ll preach this till I die because I’ve seen too many people rely on a consumer solution like a time capsule only for it to go feet up and lose someone’s irreplaceable memories and important documents. Just be careful. The one place there should be no price ceiling on is backup. At least have backblaze in place for when a single disk solution inevitably fails.
Yeah, I’m still not disputing any of this. It’s simply a good, convenient starting point for people who have nothing or think iCloud is a backup.

I am looking forward to the day I can afford to put smart blinds in all my windows, but I'm not counting on apple to make them.

Well, if they do, I assume they will make HomeKit working better. It's just buggy.
Has to be 4K or its worthless
I'm sure for marketing purposes it will be 4K. But, with heavy compression, it won't really be 4K. And, for indoor, rather a waste. 2K cameras for indoor are fine. Unless you have giant rooms.

Awesome news, as most home-connected products are not the best. And at the scale, Apple operates in, there could be a dramatic lifting of all boats with home-connected products as the entire sector and supply chain benefits. luckily, Apple sat on the sidelines so as not to be blamed for monopolizing the sector.

I'm guessing that to avoid any fines from the EU et al, they'll wait til the cameras are rolled in with matter so can be used across any platform. Am just too frustrated that they could have done this years ago especially keeping up with the airport line whilst in the meantime we have to suffer subpar products/experience from other manufacturers.

Never have entertained the idea of these types of smart security cameras or smart home appliances… but if there’s any company that could make me try it would be Apple.

If it is hassle free like all things native Apple then I’m game… they converted me to Bluetooth headphones thanks to AirPods, AirDropping files, SideCar/UniversalControl, etc

But they also need to fix the darn HomePod, if it is going to be any metric.

Connectivity wise that thing has been the most unreliable piece of gadget ever, always disappearing from the output list from nearby devices… annoyingly tiring resetting that thing.

This would be super cool. However, Gurman reporting it means it’s definitely false.

key argument for me would be convenience - for most cameras homekit setup is a pain in the ass

watch. now HomeKit will only work with Apple cameras and other Apple hardware.

squash the competition with the Apple gated Garden.
Not unless Apple decides to stop supporting Matter, which I don't see happening given they're one of the founding members. If anything, this allows Apple to sell a gateway product to non-Apple users and potentially take advantage of a 'halo effect' as happened with the original iPod.

I would dig this. I refuse to outfit my home with devices from companies that free use your personal information on the open market.

Apple has considered building its own line of smart home accessories, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple could manufacture smart home cameras and other devices that would connect to its HomeKit smart home platform and that would tie in with a planned smart home "command center" that could come out as soon as next year.

As one example, Gurman suggests Apple could create an indoor security camera that could also be used as a baby monitor, which is in line with a report we heard from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo yesterday.

Kuo claimed that Apple is designing a smart home camera that will be manufactured starting in 2026, with Apple planning to sell "tens of millions" of the devices over the long term. Kuo says that the cameras that Apple is working on will have wireless connectivity and deep integration with Apple Intelligence and Siri.

Gurman does not seem as sure that Apple will follow through on plans to create its own smart home products. He says that it's something Apple is "exploring" that could be prioritized should its upcoming smart home hub device turn out to be a success.

Apple would likely emphasize privacy with its smart home cameras, providing an alternative to cameras from companies like Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest. Ring has been derided for its privacy policies over the years, primarily because it had a "Request for Assistance" tool that allowed law enforcement officials to request video footage from Ring customers. Ring has provided police officers with Ring camera footage without notifying users, and reserves the right to do so in emergency situations. Google's Nest brand also says that it will provide police with smart home camera footage in emergency situations without a warrant.

Apple is known for having strong privacy protections, and it is possible that customers would trust a smart home camera from Apple more than a smart home camera from a company like Ring. Apple already designed a HomeKit protocol for cameras called HomeKit Secure Video, which is end-to-end encrypted.

Prior to coming out with any smart home accessories, Apple plans to release an iPad-like smart home display that will serve as a home hub. The smart home device, which is set to come out as soon as March 2025, will run apps and will control HomeKit and Matter-based accessories.

They need to have POE, battery, solar, and plug in power.

And reduced functionality to boot. It’s got potential but at present that is squandered by a sub-par experience.

Apple with PoE will never happen and you know it. Solar? Solid maybe.
But to everyone saying bring back airport, I really don’t see that happening when they’ve been eclipsed by companies like Unifi that offer an Apple-like experience and broad support. Apple could never make what they offer.

I have 4 Logitech Circle View's. Some glitches here and there but these things are solid HomeKit cameras. Apple should do one just like this.

If you look at all the smart home accessories that Apple sells on their website should give us an indication where the interest are. And they will not keep those items there if they were not selling.
