I am doing a trial of Apple Music and have noticed that some albums that appear in the store for purchase aren't necessarily available for streaming when I browse. Is this simply because Apple hasn't gotten streaming rights for an album, even though the artist has decided to make the album available for download through the store?

I am finding I really don't care for the Apple Music user interface which I find very cluttered and poorly laid out (odd for an Apple product) and am just trying to make sure I am not missing something when I am browsing.

An example would have been nice.

OK. I listen to a lot of jazz (I'm sure you are surprised given my user name). Mike LeDonne is a pianist/organist. His most recent album is called "That Feelin'" It is available in the store, but I can't locate it in Apple Music. Another example is the saxophonist Jim Snidero has an album called MD66. Also available in the store but i can't locate it in Apple Music.

Exactly. Artist/record company decides if the album is available both on iTunes and Apple Music or just on iTunes. There are even albums or EPs only available for streaming.

Usually it's available for both for commercial/current music.

I searched for Mike LeDonne and see the same. It must be licensing. “That Feeling” is on the Savant label. None of the Savant albums are on Apple Music. The Jim Snidero album is also on Savant.

OK. Thanks. I guess streaming isn't a complete replacement for purchasing albums just yet if you tend to listen to some of the less commercial music. I generally still prefer buying CDs that I like (rather than streaming or downloading) anyway.

Yeah, nothing beats purchased music. With streaming services an album that you like might be available today but not tomorrow. Same with any song on an album. Or an artist might pull their whole catalogue at any given time. That’s the downside of streaming services.
