I’ve just signed up for 6 months free Apple Music from my mobile provider, but have a question about iCloud Music Library. If I enable it, and add some music to my library from Apple Music, what happens if I end my subscription? Does the downloaded music automatically get removed from my library? Or are they still listed in the library, but just not available? I suspect the former, but wanted to check...

Thanks,

Dave.

It’s the latter. Apple can’t delete files from your device, but they can cancel the DRM license. The files will show but will be greyed out and not available.

Thanks for clarifying that.

I have another question that I hope someone can help with...

I sometimes buy albums on vinyl, and they often come with digital downloads, usually in WAV or mp3 format, and I add them to my iTunes library and then sync them to my phone. If I’m using iCloud music library, will these tracks get synced up to the iCloud library so I can then download them to my phone?

Sorry if these are daft questions, but unfortunately Apple hasn’t made it easy to find this out.

Thanks,

Dave.

That’s a good question that I can’t answer. Unless someone else knows, all you can do is try.

I do know this.. if ICML is enabled, you can not sync music to your device. You have to disable ICML, sync, then reenable.

Hi everyone.

Back to Dave’s secondary question above with the third question:

If someone subscribed to Apple Music Library, and is enabled, songs synced will become available on Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch. However, what if music purchased from iTunes Store, prior to subscription is synced ... will that purchase music have its DRM expired after cancelling Apple Music Library subscription, effectively making purchases no longer available?!

Apple seriously needs to make all of this clear if they want to increases subscribers, along with allowing us to have music NOT replaced.

Apple Match does or did do this. You can test yourself in Apple Music:

  1. Make backup/copy of a Protected ACC file/track
  2. Remove Download
  3. Re-download
  4. Check to see if the downloaded track is Purchased ACC file or an Apple Music ACC audio file

No. Your purchased music, and music you've synced from other sources through iTunes such as the hard drive of your computer become available on your iCloud music library, and are yours to keep. They are available to stream to your other devices from the cloud or download. But, music can not be synced through itunes while iCloud music library is enabled. You must disale, sync, then re-enable to sync music.

Julien,

How can I test this in apple Match if I’m to be subscribed to Apple Music, as I thought the two where completely separate, no?

I think I misread you post and jjayf answer is correct. I'm talking about old Protected ACC (DRMed) files that Apple used to sell (probably about 5 years ago). Any iTunes music you bought since then is a Purchased ACC file and doesn't contain DRM. :apple:Music has no effect on theses files you own and all :apple:Music files you do add (and don't own) will be an Apple Music ACC audio file that are DRM protected.

Here is a pic and show the 2 kind of files and an Apple Lossless audio file (ALAC ripped from a CD).

Thank you once again. This makes sense now. I’ll do a bit more digging across a few threads but I think I got the gist of how this works now.

Going to see how to create Apple Music playlists and hopefully in desktop iTunes they don’t show duplicates which could get confusing for me. As local playlists (desktop) will not sync over to the iPhone. Further I’ll have to be careful after subscribing to Apple Music since iTunes synced music will automatically be removed from my iPhone and thus most likely affect my Apple Watch S2 Nike+ (doubtful as that is via Watch app on iPhone).

A screwy thing I noticed with Apple Music and iTunes Match both is that if I have my OWN purchased music on my computer ripped from CDs or another source the matching can get really screwed up. On my iPhone, streaming a Sinatra record that I had in my Mac's iTunes library would play the wrong versions of songs on the album. My solution was to start a new iTunes library and not put any actual songs in it if Apple Music also has the albums. My old iTunes library is backed up on other hard drives.

This is driving me crazy right now. I've got a sizable iTunes library on my iMac which contains the correct versions of all my music. My iPad, which I sync manually, also has the right versions on it. My iPhone, however, does not. For example, I've got multiple versions of Frank Zappa's "You Are What You Is" across several albums. Unfortunately, every version on my iPhone library is now the one from the 2006 AAAFNRAA iTunes release. I have yet to come up with a solution to this.
