Apple Music checks account then stops download playback.

I live in an area with poor mobile reception.
I download songs from Apple Music to my iphone and can listen back.
When I take my phone in the car, I can listen to downloaded music for a while but then suddenly it stops and the songs are unavailable. I get a message to sign into iTunes but this fails as it doesn't connect to the internet over cellular.
I'm convinced that the phone attempts to call 'home' to Apple to check my account, it fails as I'm not getting cellular reception and so it somehow stops downloaded songs from being played.
When I get home I have to download the songs again.

Anybody else experience this? If it a glitch I can live with it untill fixed, if it's a designed security check then it's useless for me and makes Spotify the only alternative.

I've been listening to downloaded music, then had it stop and I noticed I'm on Edge network and it's trying to connect to the network. I'm not sure what's going on under the hood, but it does seem directly connected.

Still think that a lack of connection of either wifi and cellular is the reason that downloaded songs are greyed out.
Walked out of house in a low cellular signal area while listening offline today, when I got out of wifi range and without cellular signal the music stopped and songs greyed out. I walked back into wifi range and rather than restart the songs started to download again. They downloaded way too fast so they must have been on the phone all the time and greyed out waiting for some sort of check.

Convinced that phone greys out downloaded songs if it can't check that it's a legitimate account - which makes the whole point of offline listening impossible. Hope it's a bug rather than by design.
