Hello everyone,

I’m running into an issue with Apple Music crashing when using the search function on two of my Mac Pro 5,1 systems after clean installs of macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) 2.2.0. I’ve been trying to resolve this but haven’t had success so far.

Background

  • I have seven Mac Pro 5,1 systems (4 dual-processor and 3 single-processor), all equipped with RX 580 GPUs.
  • I’ve clean-installed macOS 15.1.1 on three systems, applied OCLP and root patches, and everything seems fine otherwise.
  • On two systems, Apple Music crashes when I use the search function. The third system works perfectly.
  • A possible clue: the two systems with issues are logged into a shared family iCloud account, while the working one uses my personal iCloud account.

What I’ve Tried

So far, I’ve attempted:

  1. Disabling the Sync Library function in Apple Music.
  2. Rebuilding the Apple Music Library by clearing ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iTunes, ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Music, and removing the Music Library.musiclibrary file.
  3. Creating a fresh Sequoia installer and performing another clean install on one system.
  4. Checking GPU acceleration and OCLP patching consistency.
  5. Logging into Apple Music with known working Apple account.
Unfortunately, none of these steps have resolved the issue.

What I’ve Learned

I used ChatGPT to investigate the issue and gained the following insights, which might help others:

  1. Crash Logs: They show thread synchronization issues (__psynch_cvwait), which could indicate resource contention, deadlocks, or network-related problems during Apple Music search.
  2. Potential Causes:
    • Compatibility issues with macOS frameworks (e.g., CoreMedia or CoreFoundation) when patched with OCLP.
    • Differences in iCloud configurations or account settings.
  3. Suggested Solutions(attempted but unsuccessful so far):
    • Clearing Apple Music caches.
    • Disabling network-dependent features like Sync Library.
    • Rebuilding the Apple Music Library.

Request for Help

Does anyone have additional suggestions or insights? I’m hoping to avoid downgrading all my Mac Pro systems if possible, as I rely heavily on Apple Music and prefer to stay on macOS 15.1.1 if a solution exists.

I’ve attached a crash log for anyone interested in taking a deeper look. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Maybe AVX2 Code. Tested with Sequoia 15.2.

I wrote a very basic avx2 checker. And it got a hit:

Sorry for my lack of knowledge and understanding with this @Macschrauber, does this mean if I want to use Apple Music's Search function that I will need to downgrade?

Thank you very much for your response.

I think so, if the Music App contains AVX2 Code, our Xeons can not run them. Containing AVX2 code, does not mean an app will crash instantly, it could be a certain functionality what contains AVX2 code what crashes, when called.

Aww crumbs. OK. Thank you for your help here. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the future. I see most people are running Monterey successfully (I was previously on a few of my Mac Pros). What OS do you recommend? Is Sonoma safe? If so, is there a specific build that runs solid in your opinion?

I am not a low level coder, but reading

EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)

in your report could lead to missing AVX2 code. But there are more educated experts here to read more details.

Test install Monterey and compare results.
