Hey all! I have been having this problem for years now but today I decided to finally ask about possible solutions.

I have been using Apple Music for a very long time now (also iTunes match since it exists). Now the thing is that whatever music I play, lists such as recently played, top 50 most played, loved songs, and such just do not update. In fact, it seems that these lists only contain songs that I already owned before I subscribed to Apple Music. None of the songs I listen to on various playlists in Apple Music make it to these lists. I have checked the rules of the playlists, and have also signed/out in several dozen times since I started to have this problem years ago. Is this perhaps a known issue and is there a solution?

Sorry I can’t help much, but maybe there are some clues:

I think some of it could be related to streaming from the cloud (or Apple Music) vs. playing a local/downloaded copy, but I’m not sure. I have iTunes Match, and if I ask Siri to play something from my library on a HomePod, the song gets streamed from the cloud. My Music App on my MacBook, however, acts as if the song never played. If I Airplay the same song from one of my devices to the same HomePod, the Music App registers the play count eventually, updates it’s “last played” date eventually, etc., and all my smart playlists sift the song into its proper place(s). If I play the song directly from the Music app on MacBook, everything updates immediately on that MacBook.

I can only guess that your Loved songs are noted as “loved” in the cloud but not on all your devices (or vice versa). I.e. the streaming copy is marked as loved, but the metadata of the instance of the song in the local versions of your library hasn’t been adjusted. That’s a wild guess, though.

Thanks for your reply! Indeed, I also think it is connected to streaming from cloud vs. local library, but even songs that I downloaded to the iPhone and listen to during flights are not counted. Somehow only songs in my pre-existing library seem to count. Hm, I guess I will try my luck with Apple support. :/
