I'm so fed up with this. I had this album loooong before Apple Music was a thing. How is this okay in any sense?

Music. Aggravating to say the least.

Apple has total control of your phone and music.

I think that would be up to whatever record company controls the album.

Are you saying you have a ripped CD version of the album in your iTunes catalog and it doesn't play on your phone?

Yes, it was showing the message in the OP. Once I turned off sync library and connected to iTunes to move everything into local storage it was resolved.
