Still new, excuse the question :) How are you guys doing this?

I want to copy music to my phone for listening without a net connection.

How are you managing this without turning off the music library every time you want to copy one song to your phone?

iTunes gives me the some of these files were not copied to the iPhone because icloud music library is enabled. message.

Are you doing this via playlists? The thing is you can't have a playlist with songs if they are not in your main itunes library.
"iCloud Music Library playlists can only contain songs from your iCloud Music Library."

...in which case then my question is how do I add a track to a playlist without my main iTunes library so I can achieve the ultimate goal of adding music to my phone and keeping my main library clean.

I really feel like Apple have made this difficult.

Thanks!

Apple has made everything difficult when it comes to iTunes, Apple Music and libraries.
So far as I know, there is no way to sync you library without turning off iCloud library. If there is no real need in your case to enable iCloud music library, just disable it. I need mine on because I have Sonos and Apple Music and sonos uses the iCloud music library for playback.
The rare time that I want to sync iTunes to my device I just disable iCloud, sync, then reenable.

Thanks for the reply! It's a pain but it's the only advice I have. I appreciate the post. If anyone is reading with any other workarounds do post.

I am but finding AM very difficult to use if you want to use your own music with it.

I assume that you know you can download music directly from Apple Music to your iOS device.

When you say, "your own music"...what do you mean? I've run into issues with the uploading of multiple versions of tracks I've produced.

My own music as in music I have either created / ripped from CD's, transferred from tape. Take a look at the first post :)

I'd like my main library in iTunes clean. IE, how it was before apple music when you can just drag and drop music files to your phone without having to have them in the iTunes library.

I never did that so didn't know of a change.

Apple Music, iTunes and the iOS Music app don't work the way I'd like them to, either.

Have you thought about putting those tracks into a different app such as VLC?

It takes away the whole music experience on the iPhone using two different apps. I wanted to use the music app in the way I use to before AM crippled the way you use to be able to manage your own music. The only advice so far that seems to work temporarily turning off the itunes library.

If anyone is reading with any other workarounds do post.

My own solution is to create a second user account on my mac, create a fresh iTunes library and enable Apple Music + enable iCloud Music Library. Any music added here will be uploaded to Apple Music and added to iCML. This can then sync to my iPhone, iPad and be available to my Sonos setup etc.

I keep my original itunes library untouched and separate on my original user account on my mac.
