Just wanted to share the brilliant work from someone on DeviantArt! He has made 2 versions of the Apple Music icon that you can see at the El Capitan page on Apple's website!

Download it if you can't wait for June 30th for Apple Music to release :)

You are actually wrong there, the only icons that were visible during Yosemite on Apple's website but not on the DPs were iTunes and Photos and those icons turned out 100% like they were previewed on the website so.. Not sure what you are talking about there sir :p

From the first DP until Yosemite was released the icons changed multiple times.

They (slightly) tweeked the colors multiple times, they changed shadow intensity and embossing multiple times, they changed the aspect ratio of all rectangle icons multiple times (they are square now), they completely changed the finder icon many many times.

Here's the Finder icon as it first appeared on Apples website...

...ironically a way better icon than the one they eventually ended up with.

Looks like crap. Its like Apple doesn't even care about consistency in their design anymore. They have the balls to still put the new music icon next to the old app store and ibooks store icons.

The icon they decided to go with is a lot better. I don't mind the extreme colors they're choosing, but it needs a lot of negative whitespace to offset it back into balance.

I kind of wish the colors would shift like a lava lamp as a song is playing and that the outer ring acted as a progress indicator. That would be hella cool. Maybe I am just crazy. It just looks like the icon wants to dance.

Yep. For iTunes, the previously screaming red alert was too much.

I suspect that the excess was intentional – there is, now, essentially, less for viewers to scream back at/about.

Now for me the most noticeable reds are:
  • for LastPass, where red is a reasonable tradition (although the favicon appears to be more restrained than the red that's in the Dock)
  • for Smultron 4, where some red is natural.

Well I liked the red icon and I disagree entirely with the opinion that it's a screaming red alert. It was more subtle than that. More importantly, it stood out. When I look at my home screen now, I see lots of white, grey, blue, green, but not much red or orange. Apple themselves said that icons should stand out a bit, when you are looking for the music icon and know that it has a red colour, you will find it instantly. It makes it recognisable. The new music icon doesn't have that quality due to the abundance of white and I do notice that I keep thinking of its position on the home screen first, rather than its colour. Same on OS X, I thought that it matched nicely with iBooks and the App Store. Now we have yet another variant with a different gradient style and it doesn't look that nice together.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree that the red icon matched everything perfectly.

I agree the icon is a little bit harder to spot on my dock now just using peripheral vision. The red iTunes icon was the only icon of its color. Idk, as far as this revised "tie dye" icon and the old red one go, I don't really prefer either one overall aesthetic wise. I am just happy they didn't go with the icon shown at the keynote basically.

If I compare both icons side by side I prefer the new one. However, the red one looked much better on the dock. Every other icon is blue or white, the red stood out and make it unique.

I must admit, I like the new iOS and OS X ones. They're refreshing and really do stand out. Now if they had gone with the original one with the colors and white switched I would have changed it.
