Hi guys,

I just noticed the Apple Digital Master icon on a few albums. I have iOS 14.6 and iPhone 12. Does this mean apple is already starting to roll the lossless service out? Or am I missing something?

Yes, for now just iPhones or iPads but the ones they are rolling out ADM are the ones that already existed in the iTunes stores waiting for the Dolby Atmos Spatial for Apple TV.

I saw this as well. I wonder if it is truly playing lossless now, or if 14.6 has given it the ability to display the Digital Masters icon. I suspect we’re still getting compressed files for the time being, but ones that are created from an Apple Digital Master. So maybe a teeny bit more optimized at least?

Digital master is not lossless. They just mean that all of the processing and mixing was done with 24 bit samples. Then the result was downsampled to 16 bit for distribution.

But the description makes it sound like it’s lossless (best-sounding audio)

Only difference I ever notice while listening in my car the bass is low without causing distortion beyond that 24 bit is not lossless just a better sampling dB.

Wish Apple would stop making it sound like it is lossless when it is not.

When the mixing and editing is done at a depth of 24 bits, rounding errors in the mathematics stay very small. So artifacts of the math disappear when the waveform is output at 16 bits. That's what they're saying.

What the OP is asking is if these “ADM” albums are being played as ALAC or are still AAC. I think they are still AAC and apple will need to probably flip the switch on WDDC.
