Hi,

Have any of you tried to use Apple Music at the same time with 2 different Apple devices using the same Apple ID?

Also, is it possible to do the same on Android's Apple Music App?

The Apple support staff seem to be confused when I ask them about this.

Only one can play at a time, and you will see the following error:

Stop being tight and just pay for a family membership! ;)

Haha it's not about membership.. even if did go for the family plan, I should still receive the same error you did, because my Apple ID is the same on both devices.

In this case, Apple does not let us use multiple devices with the same Apple ID at the same time..

Family planning would work with multiple Apple ID's on multiple devices.

So just to finnaly clarify, the screen shot you actually took had Apple Music running on both of your devices at the same time, and was using a single Apple ID (same one) on both devices correct?

Also, what would happen if u followed the error, and pressed play on the iPad, does it stop playing music on the other device at that instant?

The screenshot was just one I grabbed off Google but yes that’s the error you see when both devices are using the same Apple ID.

Yes if you press play on each you can jostle between them but only one device will play at once.

Even though we have 2 ears :D it is NOT possible to listen to two or more music tracks at the same time. So over than allowing others to 'steal' music while you listen to something different what would be the point in having a different music track playing on a different device at the same time for JUST you?

I'm able to listen on my Mac and my iPhone at the same time so "devices" must mean "mobile devices".
Well I certainly can't... and you shouldn't be able to! Is it possible you are testing tracks that you already own (as these you can play with no restrictions), or which are cached locally (which sometimes don't invoke a network connection)?

Nope...Apple Music subscription (single not family) and two different tracks I've never even heard before. It's not something I count on so if it stops working...no big deal.

It's probably another example of how wonky Apple's cloud services are from user to user.

If possible could u send us a video of you recording the music being played together? Cause it seems it's not available to everyone..

I can listen to two devices at the same time with the same Apple ID too. A MacBook and an iPhone - could be mobile devices that you cannot listen to more than one at once?

So that's 2 people who can listen to Apple Music on an iOS and mac at the same time..

So maybe only 2 similar devices... if u have 2 macs, does it work on Both?

Got two Macs (one on El Capitan and the other on Sierra) playing simultaneously with my iPhone 6 on iOS 10.3.3.

Three devices at once...iPhone on the same wifi or on LTE.

Playing 3 different albums that I don't have locally on my devices.

This seems like a pretty big bug... and no matter what I do I can only let one play at a time.

There is a trick you can use and probably the way the 2 posters who have it working without knowing. You can play on your Mac and then on an iPhone if 1) it is not connected to the same WiFi network as the Mac and 2) you have the tracks downloaded to the iPhone and 3) you have the cell data for Music cut off.

This is a loophole that Apple has yet to notice but it is still WRONG.

Already said everything's on the same wifi OR iPhone on LTE. Streamed music. Cell data for music "on" either way.

I don't think I'll be reporting a "bug".

That's a great find!! Thank you!!! I guess the same time issues affect only 2 iOS devices at a time

Firstly if it's downloaded, it's not counted, since it's already offline.. so no matter what, you can play it.. also, I don't think it matters if they are on the same wifi, or not cause Julien (above), can play it.. so it's not wrong...

I will test this for you when I’m back at home tomorrow evening.
Awesome! Sorry for the trouble.. my issue was small, but now it's gotten interesting... if I had other devices I would have tried my self, but I have just 1 iPhone.

Incorrect: Downloaded or streamed all music tracks are covered by the same exact licensing agreement (and use the same *DRM) and that is a single user/single use license.

*Music you bought/ripped and uploaded like from a CD is not DRMed.

Correct. No I’m not going to try that - mine’s the only one working as intended!

Unless you’ve bought it from the iTunes Store - Apple doesn’t seem to limit simultaneous plays of purchases.

@Apple blogger, @Brookzy's original answer was the correct one. Get a family plan. That gets you 6 concurrent sessions. They can be used by up to 6 Apple ID's or just one. I was previously on a friend's family plan....was how I was able to have music playing on my mac, Apple TV and iPhone at the same time.

Apple does NOT limit Apple ID's to a single session - except on the single user subscription.

As for the Mac and iPhone thing - there used to be race conditions with Sierra and iOS 10 that you could get around that with a single user account. Seems much more tightly integrated on HS and iOS 11.

Oh...and as to why a single user would want this? You have the music playing at your apartment, friends are over, you run out to grab a few things from the store. You jump in your car and turn on the tunes....boom!

Me, I think they should give single users two sessions....also you could have the Apple TV in the bedroom playing one thing and the Mac Mini connected to your AV receiver in the living room playing something else. :)

Here’s an interesting question... if you register the maximum six Apple IDs for a family membership, does the single session limit per Apple ID become active I wonder?

I can confirm the ability to stream on two Macs (and also an iPhone) all at the same time using the same Apple ID. I tested this with a selection of songs in the top charts on the 'Browse' section.

Tested on same network all in proximity of each other and I am on a family subscription.

Hope this helps!
