I just started my Apple Music trial. I'm happy with it so far, but I have a big question:

Let's say in a few years I've added a few hundred tracks to my Music library from Apple Music, and I end my subscription. What happens to those tracks?

Do they just vanish from the library? Or do they stay in the list but become unplayable?

I would rather the latter happen, so then I can go through the unplayable tracks and purchase (to own) the ones I really want. Basically, I'd rather not be able to accidentally lose the metadata that is the tracks I've added to my library.

Since I can't turn off my subscription without losing the trial, I can't test this, so I wonder what others may have experienced. Thanks for any input!

After you cancel the Apple Music subscription the music you downloaded will become grayed out and will not be playable for 30 days.

Within 30 days you can re-sign back to regain the right to play tracks.

After 30 days they will disappear.

Thanks for the response. This sounds acceptable.

Being able to right-click a track and show it in the store, then purchase it to keep is a useful feature if I ever decide to stop paying for Apple Music.

I was just about to ask this question! I’ve got a free sub through my mobile phone which is ending soon, and I wondered what would happen to my library when that ends. Sound like I can re-subscribe direct and it will all still be there. Nice one.
