Don’t make fun of me, I’m technologically challenged.

I have always downloaded songs from iTunes. I like knowing I have a “hard copy” stored in a definite place and that I own it.

I recently started my free trial of Apple Music. I really like it and will likely keep it. However, and I think I know the answer to this, is adding a song in Apple Music the same as if I had downloaded it from iTunes? I am guessing no. I still have to go into iTunes and actually purchase a song to “own” a copy of it?

Thanks in advance. Any further explanation of the differences you feel would be helpful, I’d be happy to hear.

Yep you're exactly right. You can add Apple Music songs to your iTunes Library, but as soon as you end your Apple Music subscription you can no longer listen to them, unless you've bought the song from iTunes.

A good way to think of it is as a rental service for iTunes songs. Have as many songs as you want, and listen to them as many times as you want, but if you stop paying your rent you have to give them back. ;)
