I only listen to rock and roll music on Apple Music since its launch. Classic rock such as Beatles, Stones, The Who, Bruce Springsteen and so on. The only rock artist classified as "alternative" that I like (and often listen) is Jake Bugg.

But today's "my new music mix" playlist got a lot of horrible alternative songs (12 in total), dance music (1 song), music for relaxation (1) and a romantic song by Lucy Spraggan. WTF?

Meanwhile on Spotify's Release Radar there are songs by Oasis, White Lies, R.E.M., Joe Cocker, The Turtles, The Monkees, Beach Boys etc.

Btw the "my favorites mix" got 2 songs repeated.

What you think? Did I do something wrong? Is the feature not working well? What are your personalized playlists like?

I'd guess that you got the raw end of the 'new feature' deal.

My first playlists were actually very good, and on point with my tastes.
This week, My Favourites Mix is excellent infact. While I've only listened to a couple of songs from My New Music Mix (on my dinner break), and it was ok though I did skip a couple half-way through due to those songs not being great.

I would think they should improve for you over time; hopefully next week it will be better. Also, if you don't already, Like/Dislike songs in your library and as you are listening to songs to help tailor your taste profile for AM.

It sounds like you didn't setup AM when you joined. Play count is irrelevant as far as I know.

Tap on the person icon in the top left, then tap "Choose Artists For You".

Do the artists you follow on Connect influence on that lists?

I noticed that the option "follow automatically" (on the person icon) was on and I was following many artists that I don't like.

I don't believe so, no.

It's more from your initial choices (when you first setup AM), your listening habits, and your Like/Don't Like voting. See 'Refine the For You suggestions' for a bit more information.

Just to be clear, again, your "listening habits" have no influence on the For You suggestions. It's only the artists you "Follow" in Choose Artists, and your likes. You can also long press on a suggestion, and choose "I don't like this suggestion".

I respectfully have to disagree.

Go and listen to a playlist or album from brand new genre or era of music. In the next day or so, your For You section will have at least one recommendation based on that new listening habit.

A recent example for myself was after I watched a documentary on The Carpenters. Afterwards I went and listened to a playlist of their greatest hits, of which I had never listened to before or anything similar; especially recently or identified in the 'Choose Artists' section. The next day I had playlist and album recommendations alongside the text 'Because you listen to The Carpenters'.

If I were to do the same thing by suddenly listening to classical music (a genre I do not listen to normally), I would then receive at least one or two recommendations based on that the next time For You updates.

Granted, it's not quite as obvious or prevalent now in the iOS 10 UI update, as in iOS 8 and 9 the refreshing of For You recommendations would happen much more frequently, so you could easily listen to a few songs from a brand new artist, and suddenly have completely different recommendations.
