So they're going to make two versions?

One for the US and one for the rest of the world?

"Verizon is Apple’s best choice for the tablet’s Internet connectivity extension beyond Wi-Fi hotspots"

This source sounds about as credible as well no one.

My thoughts exactly. He also states the rumored media event as a fact. And lets not even mention about ending sentences with a preposition :).

There are chipsets with CDMA and GSM support, such as in the BlackBerry 8830. I believe that there are CDMA/WCDMA/GSM chipsets now too. Apple doesn't need to make multiple versions, just use a chipset that supports everything.

The US isn't the only country with CDMA; even Australia used it until a couple of years ago. It's in widespread use over here in NZ (about 1 in 3 people are on it, I believe).

...and Japan, and China, and other Asian countries.

CDMA (and EVDO) will be around for a good long time.

Yep, the HTC Imagio has CDMA + GSM/WCDMA (with HSDPA/HSUPA), for example.

It all depends on whether it's cheaper for Apple to make a combo or if they'd save money with two distinct models. Only they know for sure.

The main difference is that I think Verizon could negotiate better for case branding if there was a separate CDMA model. Otherwise, no.

If they offer the Tablet multi carrier, I think the whole thing will depend on a BTO type thing. You choose before hand your carrier. That and maybe prebuilt models with x-radio on brick and mortar stores

There's got to be a point where the amount of people willing to move to AT&T becomes too small. *sigh* There's just gotta be…

Do you mean Verizon's name on the case itself? Ugh. One of the many things I like about Apple products is that it doesn't look like it belongs racing on Daytona track.

right.. so apple is trying to "upgrade" to CMDA support, meanwhile australia has dropped CMDA support and heading towards 3G/4G etc.

is australia stupid or is america lagging behind?

I wonder if these "iPhone to Verizon" people are the "iPhone Nano" people in disguise...

Equally irritating, without question.

We're America! We never lag…except in intelligence, class, bleeding edge tech, initiative, health care, creativity & schooling system.

It makes sense for Apple to produce a CDMA/EVDO model, since CDMA has better coverage in the US. EVDO isn't a bad technology itself, and the cost of switching to WCDMA ("3G") for such a large geographical area is prohibitive when LTE is approaching and has a lot more benefits.

In Canada, Bell and Telus had to team up in order to afford a WCDMA rollout. The resulting network is pretty much identical to NextG in Australia (and XT over here).

HA! the general standard from non-americans seems to be that view. you only have yourselfs to blame.

Don't get too happy. I'm pretty sure we are leading the world in underage students sleeping with their teachers.

and cell phones ala the iphone

Yes, so the teachers and students can communicate…That's why we need Verizon. How many potential booty calls have students missed on the AT&T network!

Verizon's new ad slogan: Give piece a chance!

My thoughts on the Verizon iPhone: To those who say that Verizon won't get the iPhone because they demand "too much control??" They are in the process of getting the Nexus One, a phone without VCast, sold directly by Google. If that's not getting over there control issues, I don't know what is.

As for the Verizon iPhone, Apple would be stupid not to tap into that market with the continued increase in smartphone desire by customers, couple with Verizon's steller network. As for the Voice + Data concerns, LTE is around the corner (which as far as I know lets you do both) so it would be smart for them to get in the door early to perfect the Verizon iPhone for when it's up and running.

PS -- To address the argument that it would be a "waste" to develop a CDMA chip when the capability is about to become outdated, I think it's a moot point. The fact of the matter is a lot of money can be made on the Verizon version in a short period of time (without a large capital investment) and the technology is changing so quickly anyway, in a year, they phone will be completely different as we've seen.
