Universal Apple News - can the topics with the red dot be turned off?

I've encountered a bit of a frustration with Apple News lately. On any of my iOS devices, I can't seem to turn off the topics with red dots next to them. They're in the same list as the news sources.

I'm tired of all the stories about politics and want to turn them off!! I know where to get them when I need an update, but I want my news feed filled with other topics, like all the sports sites I subscribe to!! The regular delete buttons don't exist with the election or COVID topics, neither of which I need any more overload of information about right now.

I know I can always remove the News app and just use the individual apps for what I want, but I'm hoping there's a way to keep Apple around without these topics.

I was afraid of that being the case. Classic "it's a feature, not a bug" on Apple's part.

Simple fix here; I'll just delete the News app for the time being.
