Apple News is currently a very poor experience in iOS 13 Dark Mode.
It’s actually regressed from when I was using it with Smart Invert back in iOS 12.X.
At least then it was consistent, if not ideal.
When you first start Apple News in Dark Mode, it all looks great with nice dark menus and article lists etc.
You then click into the Spotlight view and find that, disappointingly, it is displayed with a White background and thus completely inconsistent.
When you open an article from the main screen or from categories that you are following, you also find that that every single article has a White background as well.
As a result, my current experience goes like this.
When I open Apple News whilst in Dark Mode, I will initially browse the menus and articles until finding one that I wish to read.
Once I find that first article, I will then bring down the Control Centre where I have an Accessibility button which allows me to invoke Smart Invert in order to read the article with a Black background.
Upon finishing, I return to the Article List to find it displayed with a bright White background and Black text.
Not wishing to continually disable and enable Smart Invert every time, I just plough through the inconsistent experience until I’ve read all of the articles of interest.
Then, upon closing Apple News, I turn off Smart Invert to continue my day in Dark Mode.
I’m really surprised Apple have released the App in this state, even at this Beta stage.
My temporary workaround isn’t even practical for most iDevice users as the vast majority won’t know how to customise the Control Centre to add the Smart Invert button.
I use Apple News several times a day, so hopefully this will be resolved to deliver a true and consistent Dark Mode within Apple News by final GM release as it’s certainly very poor as things stand.
PS - I’m unsure whether I’m permitted to upload a screen recording onto the forum given that this is a Beta (albeit a Public one now). If I’m allowed, I will.
