For the life of me I can't figure it out. I have a subscription for another newspaper, and apple news asks me to log in. For the NYT it does not... are there no "paywall" restriction for the NYT?

I should add that I subscribe the the digital only NYT and I signed up outside of Apple.. that is, I signed up directly on nytimes.com

Maybe you haven't hit your limit yet for the free articles?

Not so much n-number free articles a month type thing. Looks more like "NYT" gives a lot of it away in the News app. So, appears no need to enter subscription information, and that News is not a total replacement for "NYT" app or website.

Look at "Wall Street Journal" in News to see how subscriptions work. Right off the bat is the sign-in banner. And as you scroll through, you will see articles tagged with "Subscription": pull up one of those articles and you will see a sign-up there as well.

ADD: if a subscription is needed to read articles, and have one via iTunes, News will automatically recognize it and give you access.
