What do you think overall of the mess involving Apple, NeXT, Be, Sculley, Jobs, Gassee, Amelio?
I mean, the one where Jobs was kicked out of Apple in 1985 after fighting with Sculley and started NeXT, then Gassee was kicked out of Apple and started Be. Sculley themselves were kicked out in around 1993, then Spindler was succeeded by Amelio, who had to then choose between Be and NeXT. NeXT won of course and Jobs then kicked out Amelio soon afterwards.

Honestly, I think Jobs didn't know what he was doing when he brought in Sculley. He eventually took advantage of his power and fired Jobs, when Jobs was the genius behind it all. NeXT after all was the pre-Macintosh OS. Sculley was a mistake, and when Jobs came back, it was all uphill from there. The Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, and the present.

The conventional wisdom is that Scully was a disaster, but the reality was that Apple was a complete mess financially and organizationally when he was asked to run the company, and under his leadership Apple became more profitable than it had ever been to that time. Scully wasn't a technologist, but he knew how to run a business. He gets blamed for a lot of things over which he had little control.

Scully made Apple huge.
With the technology Apple had, they needed someone like Scully (Pepsi man) to lead a growing company into getting truly successful. Steve, as brilliant as he is.... just couldn't do that back then. He simply was too eccentric to lead a big company.
But, Scully, Spindler nor Amelio could give Apple new technology, i.e. the new OS they were looking for.
Luckily, with his eccentricity Steve gave us NeXT which in due time gave us Mac OS X back @ Apple.
Steve had matured (became a marketing man himself), had Apple in ab-so-lute need of a new OS, and so the timimg was perfect: Steve iCEO :)
