I work for Cingular Wireless, I receive a discount on apple products (15%). My discount is dependent on the fact that I order my product on apple's online store. I am ordering a macbook pro at the end of september.

My question is this, I have heard som horror stories about ordering from the online store. When I order my MBP i want it within the week!! I have heard that people will wait as long as a month to recieve their order. Is this true? What experiences have you guys had ordering from the apple online store?

It depends on how high the demand/how low the supply is at the time - if Apple just updated their computers, and everyone is purchasing them simultaneously, then yeah, it could be a few weeks...

If, on the other hand, Apple STILL hasn't updated their Macbook Pros, then you'll get yours fast.

i have always ordered from the apple store except for the macbook...

never a complaint from me... except the waiting does kinda suck...

(i always BTO my machines... ) hence the wait...

I understand wanting your order when you order it....but is there any reason that you are demanding to receive yours within the week you ordered it? You can always pay more for faster shipping or order your system a week or two before you actually need it.

I want it within the week BECAUSE I WANT TO FREAKING PLAY WITH MY NEW TOY OF COURSE!!!

What does BTO mean? (sorry im dumb)

I honestly dont mind having to wait more than a week, I just dont want to wait a month.

BTO = Built to order.. in other words, buying a machine and upgrading the specs, rather than just buying the stock configuration.

I understand!!! The suspense does make it that much sweeter though. Can you but from the retail store and get your discount??

i ordered my Mac mini the day they came out and i got it within 10 days (if i recall correctly). i picked up my MBP from the apple store.

usually there is only a long wait if you went to town customizing your machine or if there are a lot of people ordering the same thing (i.e., when a new product comes out or a product has a price drop).

good luck and remember, the longer you wait to order it, the more time it'll be until you actually have one.

I would call up Apple @ 1-800-MyApple and ask to speak with a corporate sales rep.

They should know what procedures you'll need to follow to qualify for the discount.

Generally your order will be delayed 3-5 weeks if you BTO your order.

Some corporate purchasing rules require all factory original components which means you'll be paying quite a bit extra if you order Apple installed Samsung RAM and upgraded hard drives.

You can save considerably purchasing your RAM from Datamem.com or OWC(MacSales.com)

Thanks for the advice!

Heres a thought ive been kicking around, can i go to an apple store and configure my MBP at the store and buy it there that day. I know all the MBP have stock specs, but I can I go to an apple store and say I want this MBP with 1 GB of ram and a 120gb hard drive and get them to configure it that day with the purchase....ill let go of my discount to get the product that day you know? Will it cost more to configure in the store than online?

The Apple Store can add RAM for you while you wait, but you'd probably have to order any larger HD factory installed putting you back in the BTO delay.

I would just buy the stock model and order 2 GB RAM from Datamem.com.

I would then buy a MyBook 250 GB external 7200 RPM HD.

You're better off with an external for backups and storage anyway.

Or...........

Just buy an Apple factory refurb with all the stuff you want bench tested, pristine and ready to go with the full factory warrantee and available Applecare.

3-5 weeks if you BTO your order? Was that a typo? Did you mean 3-5 DAYS?? When I BTO on the website it estimates shipping only a few DAYS more than normal..not WEEEEEEEEEKS!! OUCH!

It can easily go WEEKS if you order a popular upgrade and they get hammered with back orders.
If you ordered BTO and Apple upgrades your machine with the latest update, then
it should be well worth the wait.

If your shipment gets delayed now with no BTO upgrades, there's a good chance Apple is filling your order with the latest update.

Best advice.

Clean your room, clean your office, go on long walks, call mom, do your taxes,
paint the house or anything else to keep your finger off that refresh button.;)

BTO options are not available in the retail stores. So if you gotta have it now, forego the BTO options and buy a stock MBP from a retail store. If you order online it could be anywhere from a few days to a month to receive your order.
