Apple passes Motorola to become largest U.S. phone-maker

Motorola "has lost its position as the largest U.S. maker of phones to Apple Inc.," Peter Svensson reports for The Associated Press.

"Motorola sold a total of 8.5 million phones in the quarter, while Apple sold 8.8 million iPhones," Svensson reports. "Four years ago, when the Razr was still popular, Motorola sold 46.1 million phones in the first quarter."

"The Schaumburg, Ill., company has been trying to turn around that long slide in phone sales by focusing on new smart phones, including the Droid," Svensson reports. "That strategy is bearing fruit, but too slowly to compensate for the drop in overall phone sales. Motorola sold 2.3 million smart phones in the first three months of the year."

Svennsson reports, "As a whole, Motorola earned $69 million, or 3 cents per share in the quarter... Revenue fell 6.1 percent to $5.04 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting $5.1 billion in revenue."

see that does not add up. Given the fact that apple is not number one in smart phones in the US. Much less the largest in all cell phones.

Rim sells a lot more phones than Apple and it only sell smart phones so how could apple being the largest in all cell phones if they can not even be number 1 in smart phones.

Good grief.... Motorola sold 46.1 million phones in one quarter back when the Razr was the "must-have" phone? Wow. That seems like such a huge number. I'd assume that number includes all Motorola phones that quarter, Razr and non-Razr, and across multiple carriers, but that still seems like an awful lot of handsets. It's amazing how far they have fallen.
