First trip to Europe with Apple Pay on-board the iPhone. What experience have you had with stores, restaurants, and hotels pushing Dynamic Currency Conversion? Does Apple Pay time-out, does Apple Pay allow the user to accept or deny DCC before authorizing or does Apple Pay accept the push of DCC as the default from the merchant?

Love to hear your FIRST-HAND experience.

BUMP

All these iPhone owners who have supposedly embraced Apple Pay and no one has come up against DCC ... c'mon.

One FINAL bump.

I tried to post this same question on the Apple Apple Pay Support Communities today BUT Apple threw it out claiming it was a poll or petition and not a technical question ... yeah, right.

It will depend on the terminal and country.

In some cases, DCC is not offered on contactless transactions, so it will always process in local currency. This is what I experienced in Australia where the terminal would normally offer DCC on chip transactions.

In other cases, the terminal will prompt for DCC after you tap and you make the choice on the terminal. This is what I experienced in Spain.

In both cases, the terminal is facing the customer so it is easy to make a choice.

This is not specific to Apple Pay and will be the same if using a contactless card.

Hey thanks for the reply.

While I've encountered DCC many times in Europe, thinking about it now, it has only "popped up" for me when inserting my chip card never when tapping a contactless POS terminal. So, with contactless pay, you have to FINISH the transaction on the terminal keypad AND I guess my question then is, when using Apple Pay, does that transaction finishing question re: do you accept DCC or not now show on the iPhone screen or is it still on the POS terminal?

DCC is an incredible rip-off and unfortunately it's becoming more pervasive - even had the Sheraton Airport Frankfurt try to pass it off.

It will always be on the POS terminal. Apple Pay simply emulates contactless EMV, and its involvement in the transaction ends once it is tapped on the terminal.

DCC can only be offered once a card/device is inserted or tapped as it needs to know the card's home currency.
