I just set up a new credit card in Apple Pay on my 16PM. This is the first new card on this phone.

Interestingly, instead of asking me to take a picture of the card, it told me to put the phone next to either the chip or magnetic stripe. So I placed the phone's top (since I assumed this was an NFC read) over the credit card's chip. Lo and behold, the phone got full information about my card.

I thought that was really neat. Being curious, I have been Googling for further information about this new method of adding cards to Apple Pay. I've come up completely empty, and I'm usually pretty good at Googling.

Does anyone know more about this, or can point me to an article somewhere? Thanks!

When I received my new Capital One card in the mail, I was given the option of verifying it by holding it against the screen of my iPhone 13 mini [edit: using their installed app] guided by a diagram displayed on the screen.

I think it has to be NFC. I had the same experience with my 14 PM. Maybe it’s using part of the new system where iPhones can accept payment from cards?
