Yesterday I bought a coffee around 2PM using Apple Pay. Transaction went through fine, and I enjoyed my coffee.

I got a notification at around 11:30PM (Over NINE HOURS later!) that the transaction was declined. In the wallet app under "Latest Transactions" it shows as declined with the amount crossed out, and in my Chase banking app for the card, it doesn't show the transaction at all.

I'm going to wait a couple of days to make sure the transaction doesn't appear, then go make good with the vendor (I'm not going to stiff them out of $2!) but I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else. I could see it costing a vendor a lot of money if this happened on, say, a $200 transaction!

Interesting scenario, and please do follow up here and let us know what you find out.
Sounds like it is more a quirk with your issuing bank (Chase) than with Apple Pay.

Was this a credit or debit card?

A credit card. One that I've used probably hundreds of times with Apple Pay at this vendor. That's what makes it extra odd.

I've had Apple Pay declines before, but they are usually immediate and I just try a different payment method. This time it went through and even printed a receipt, which sadly, I threw out. Then *bamf*, declined nine hours later.

Nine hours is a hell of lag time!

Definitely odd to get an authorization code from the bank (which would be required) and then have it declined 9 hours later.
You may want to follow up with the credit card to find out why it was declined, etc.
I really don't think this is an Apple Pay issue per se, but it is strange to say the least.

I'd wait and see if it posts to your account after a day or two. They may have had a snag on their back end with the pending transaction (I've had this happen where a pending one disappears, only to reappear once it posts).

I have had this happen once or twice as well. The transactions eventually did show up on the card within a few days.

That is weird. I’ve had a chase card associated with my Apple Pay and have never had a decline period, let alone hours later. You’re right about the potential implications for the vendor.

so you got a free cuppa ? Wouldn't argue against that... but..err... if your looking for honesty... i guess its no fuss... The merchant wouldn't have given it to you otherwise, you called you out at "some stage"

I forgot to pay at service station, and before i could drive off, the guy was running like mad trying to get my attention... No biggie. All good, never happened again.

I mentioned it to them a few days later, and they said no big deal, and to enjoy the free cup. It hasn't happened since, but the location closed for renovation a few weeks ago so I haven't been able to go back there since then.
