Well it turns out that at least RBC has been lying to me for what, about 3 years since Apple Pay launched in Canada? Professing that they had no transaction limits. Well, I put that to the test when I went to buy my iPhone X with Apple Pay on Saturday. Boom. Declined.

The RBC CS rep escalated to their security and was as shocked as I was when they told her the transaction limit was $200. (So, I've been hounding vendors for the last 2+ years telling them to get the limits bumped up on their terminals).

Putting winter tires on my SUV today. Think I'll do the Apple Pay with CIBC and see if they have a limit that they were lying about as well.

Such BS!!! Time we all start hounding them!!! This is AT LEAST as secure as chip+PIN - why the hell are you limiting our capability of doing away with the plastic cards? (especially as the RFID on the cards makes them prone to people walking around with RFID scanners....scamming $100 at a time)

Funny - I think we were chatting about this in another thread a few weeks back. This weekend with a new TD Visa I have I finally had a chance to test a purchase greater than $100 (but less than $200 which is the merchant's limit on tap to pay). Just like the Scotia Visa I was using, it also did the usual beep but then gave an error.

You're exactly right though. It is at least as secure as chip+pin, if not more secure than chip+pin if you use a 6 digit or great passcode on your iPhone.

The phone (my 6s) wasn't responding to the double-click for Apple Pay, so I got out the Visa to pay for the tires. I do need to verify if CIBC is the same or not - they also said there were no limits, but after discovering that wasn't true of RBC, I'm thinking it needs to be verified.

Then we need to make sure Apple's aware - I hope this is in violation of their Apple Pay agreement. :) Then (depending on Apple's feedback) I think we need to find a way to sic the press on them. :) Some consumer watchdog group / reporter.
