Apple Pay/UnionPay in China

Has anyone else actually used Apple Pay in China?

I've had an odd experience with one of my cards; used it in-app on my wife's phone a few times yesterday and in person in Burger King myself today; each time I've been asked for the pin in addition to Touch ID (in app on the phone, in person on the payment terminal)

Has anyone else experienced the same?

update: this is how it's supposed to work.

and you also have to sign over a certain amount, depending on the merchant.

so touch id, pin AND sign. secure? yes. convenient? really really not.

The Chinese AP page for merchants does state pins may be requested. That's actually better than in the UK, where I wrote about my attempt at a high value transaction and it was declined, no pin number option but using the card worked fine. I suspect the processors are a bit wary and are protecting themselves a little, especially a brand new market such as yours.

Yeah I can understand pin. UnionPay cards require it almost everywhere with quickpass anyway.

The signing the receipt on physical purchases (without a card present to compare to? Huh?) is what I find strange and inconvenient

I saw someone in front of me proudly make an Apple Pay transaction yesterday and I couldn't believe how pointless it is to use. It's exactly the same process as swiping a card with UnionPay, except the card is 'swiped' digitally rather than magnetically. This isn't Apple Pay, I doubt the transaction is even going through Apple. (which is probably the whole point)

It makes me realise that AliPay is actually much more convenient with their QR code scanner. If only I could get my AliPay account to register my debit card ...

i always use it in places like burger king and mcdonalds, just because. on the one hand, i don't have to get my wallet out of my pocket but on the other, it's not much more (at all more) convenient.
