I picked up a 4th gen iPad Pro 12.9” Black Friday. I’m thinking about having an Apple pencil as well. I could go with the 2nd gen, but wonder when the 3rd gen will come out. Any new features it will have?

No news/rumors on AP3 as far as I’m aware. Just get the 2nd gen, it’s outstanding.
If reactions to the 1st gen Pencil (after the 2nd gen was released) is any indicator, then I recommend waiting for the 3rd gen.

When the 1st gen was released, the response was, "it's fantastic!". But after the 2nd gen was released, the opinion of the 1st gen immediately changed to, "ewww, it is a laggy mess!". :)

The OP should get ahead of things and avoid the laggy, stuttering mess known as the 2nd gen Apple Pencil. ;)

All kidding aside, the 1st and 2nd gen Apple Pencils are fantastic. The only determining factor should be which gen Pencil does your iPad support?

Exactly. You’re assuming a 3rd gen would be supported by your current iPad. Perhaps it would but if I were you I’d buy the gen 2 right. Ow. $99 at Best Buy at the moment. Great price. Pull the trigger.

My dilemma - I’m waiting to upgrade iPads if they release one this spring. Now will they release a AP3? Or should I jump in the deal now with a couple $20 BB gift cards I got this Black Friday? Essentially getting the AP for $59. But then I’m gambling the new iPads - when they do come out - work with AP2.

Unless there's some technical limitation that prevents an AP2 from working with a micro LED display in the rumoured next iPad Pro, I don't see an Pencil 3 in the near future.

I hear you. But there wasn’t a technical limitation to the AP1 not working on the newer iPads either. We all know technical limitations aren’t always what leads Apple to discontinue usability with new products.

yes they had a new charging method, but that doesn’t mean if I have an alternate way to charge the AP1 I shouldn’t be able to use it on the newer iPads. But that’s Apple.

Yeah, I also wonder what more could Apple do to the Pencil aside from changing colour?

May be they could make them even smaller or lighter like a real pencil size. Or may be they could make it more power efficient so that it could use a smaller batter and be lighter. They could put different tip options and make it uncompatible with the first 2 gens just because they can..etc lol

Well, that’s my fear with Apple. Just imagine, to use a new version of the Pencil, if one needs to buy a whole new iPad. The problem is they have done it before with the version 1 so it’s very possible they can do it again!
