Hi,

I have this over 1TB library that has pretty much all my photos and videos. It is stored on an external LaCie 5TB Rugged in Thunderbolt 1 I believe since my iMac is a Late 2012. Editing the names on the photos and viewing them is slow... I was wondering if there was any easy way to improved performance.

PS: I am not going to open the iMac - I did it once to replace the broken HDD with a 1TB SSD and also repaired the hinge. :).

I was thinking about buying a 2 TB external SSD such has WD 2TB My Passport SSD Portable Storage or the Sandisk 2 TB Extreme portable ssd...

Would you have any other ideas?

Thanks!!

Any spindle mechanised HDD solution with such huge library is going to struggle. Your SSD idea is not bad actually. Check if you can upgrade the RAM on your Mac as well. What’s it at right now?

It's an i7 with 32GB of ram, its a late 2012 27in.

I am wondering if going SSD through thunderbolt 1 (if possible) or USB 3.0 will increase a by a lot the performance. Because it is costly for a 2 TB!

I boot from an external 1TB SSD via TB3. No problem. My storage is a 4TB SSD RAID O via TB3. No problem. My Time Machine HHD is 8TB and is also via TB3. I no longer use the internal 512 SSD.

Ha! I wish I could do that but my iMac late 2012 won't give me TB3... :)

I moved a client's library on a 2008 Mac Pro from HDD to SATA SSD. This was several years ago. It too was a huge library. There was a considerable performance boost in Photo's.

USB 3.0 2T is not that expensive (subjective I know) - performance gain compared to any spinning disk is going to be huge.

After doing a lot of research, I went with a Seagate 2TB Slim USB 3.0 external. $64 at BestBuy, and they walked it out my car, to boot. :)
