After updating to iOS 14.5, the Apple Podcast app freezes after 20s. This only happens if it has internet service (Wifi, Cellular). Interesting enough, it does not happen in Airplane mode (Wifi and Cellular off).
I deleted and reinstalled the app and all of the previously downloaded podcast. It still freezes. Any other ideas?

I use overcast. Look into alternatives if apples own isn’t working well for you? I always use apples own stuff when I can- but often there are better alternatives. In this case overcast is one. Take a look.

Not seeing any freezes myself, but, Podcasts as a service has been showing problems since Thursday.

Getting new episodes to show up have been hit/miss for me, so you might be seeing some snag with refreshing your subscriptions/feeds?

ADD: using Downcast as a stop-gap measure for some of my podcast subscriptions.

@NoBoMac You are probably right in that maybe it is the Podcast server. I downloaded Overcast. I like it. However, that is also freezing while trying to download. I had to terminate it and restarted several times but it didn't help.
I downloaded the Apple Podcast App onto my daughters iPhone 7 (running iOS 14.5) Same issue the Apple Podcast app on her iPhone 7.

Update... Yes the native Podcast app still freezes after 20 seconds with internet service (Wifi or cellular). 14.5.1 didn't fix the issue. I used the Apple Support App to talk to a Support Agent. He said that they are aware of the problem and will be fixed in the next update.

Also, Overcast is working great now. I think it had something to do with a server outrage (there is a story on the MacRumors news page).

This problem, podcasts stopping at 20 seconds typically, also seems to affect the HEOS app, i.e. the Denon/Marantz' Home Entertainment Operating System on my iphone SE. The HEOS phone app is the control panel for podcasts streaming to my Marantz MCR612 receiver. The problem case is not streaming from local storage on the phone, i.e. from a fully downloaded podcast file, but rather streaming to the Marantz, which has HEOS internally as well. I can easy stream all stations, meaning streaming with no start and stop times displayed, but I cannot stream podcasts, streaming with a start and stop time, at all generally. This is all obviously very complicated, but the key clue and commonality between our two cases is stopping after 20 seconds typically, not always. Podcast failure at 20 seconds in both your case and mine is too big a coincidence to not be related to a causal factor. So something in the iphone must be disrupting podcasts (not stations) whether on the native Apple podcast app or on Denon's HEOS app, and likely on any podcast app on the phone. Upgrading to IOS 15.0.1 did not help at all, so if this is something Apple can/should fix, they have not got to is over the summer to early fall months. Like you, I can play podcasts without problems on Apple's Podcast app, which is not networked, so wifi and cellular are not essential.
