Apple, I will QUIT MY JOB and DESIGN THE ABSOLUTE BEST PODCAST APP FOR YOU.

Who is in charge of the Podcast app? Do we know? In what world would someone want their Podcasts to be ordered by date of the subscription (or follow, now)?? How about in order of most recently updated, or played? Or at least an option to change it?

Also, why is 90% of the bloat on Listen Now recommending me new podcasts? This isn't 2min long music. Most people don't just randomly start shuffling through podcasts. The fact that ONE ROW is dedicated to my subscriptions, and the rest of the many rows to recommending new content is horrendous. I get around 10-12 new podcast episodes a day and have to scroll on one tiny row to see them all.

Also, why does it take 24-48 hours (on a good day) to distribute episodes? Spotify and Overcast get them almost instantaneously. My friend's podcast did not distribute for 2 weeks on Apple Podcast, yet got on Spotify immediately. Apple Support said this is to be expected? Seriously?

DO BETTER. PLEASE. BEFORE iOS 15 for goodness sakes.

I rarely understand the internal machinations at Apple - why they think a particular thing is A Good Idea - and especially when it comes to their own apps. Its why a significant number of them live in a folder called 'Junk Drawer' on my iPhone.

For what it's worth, I use Pocket Casts as my player - and have it set to list by Podcast Name. And I've also set the icon size / layout, too.
In the greater scheme of things, I also appreciate I really don't listen to casts that often anyway, but I resent developers (like Apple) imposing rules of operation - especially flogging their own 'curated' choices.

Thanks for the update. In anticipation of updating to 14.5, I am downloading PocketCasts and moving my podcasts there.

I find the Podcasts app almost unusable - every update seems to make it slightly more rubbish. It’s baffling that something that should be so simple just looks like a total mess - confusing interface, duplicated functions, weird features that are more prominent than the actual content you’ve subscribed to. It is, by some distance, the absolute worst thing to ever emerge from Cupertino. Everyone involved in it should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

And by the time you get used to the new -worse- interface, they update it again.

Some good news though, looks like Apple will be making additional changes to the Podcast app shortly.
That is great news and makes one think the changes should be coming before iOS 15! Thanks for sharing.

The Podcasts app really is garbage. I'm obviously pro-Apple (hence being on this site) but it doesn't even do basic things right. No playlists (let alone smart playlists!), no real ability to use with the watch in any manageable way, no easy way of seeing what you have got left to listen to, it's absolutely abysmal.

After trying a few I've gone for iCatcher! as this has the best integration with Apple Watch once Overcast had it's little tantrum about Apple Watch, and while the smart playlist isn't as clever as Overcast's it's still very usable.

Not only what is mentioned above, but the app gets the podcasts after you can see them and play them in itunes at least on windows. Didn't try it on my mac last week

I have tried over and over to use Apple's Podcast app, but the final straw for me is when Podcasts weren't syncing to my Apple Watch, I would also get shows that would sync late in the evening and for the longest time (and still an issue) NO notifications pushed to the watch that a new episode was available.

It is simply a terrible app that has been forgotten by Apple, until then Pocketcast is clearly the best out there..

And you get 10gb in the pocketcast cloud for mp3 and m4b files. It’s great

Agree with everything that was said. Library is now almost completely unresponsive to me.

App is becoming bloatware.
