Apple Product Names

I love apple and all their products (except the lack of a headless mid to low range mac tower) but one things annoys me to no end.

mac named all their products very nicely i think, the 2 primary families of products, the ipod, and the mac.

in each family they have several different products based off the family name.
ipod-
ipod shuffle
ipod nano
ipod classic
ipod touch

mac-
macbook
macbook pro
macbook air
mac mini
imac!!!!
mac pro

wtf is with the imac! i know its been around forever and all but its just like with the ipod classic, once they built a family of similar products they made its name fall in line, the imac is the odd man out, its the 'classic' mac essentially, although i dont like the name mac classic im sure the guys at apple can make a new name that will be ear catching and fall in line with mac... names.

is it just me that finds that slightly irritating?

lol yes and no, i want a mac something, maybe i will like the name mac classic if i hear jobs say it, lol. but ya, just some mac (insert word here) name, not (insert letter here)mac

I actually like Apple's previous naming scheme better.. Consumer machines have the "i" and pro machines have the "Power". Despite the inconsistency in the current naming scheme I'd keep the iMac alone. I think it would hurt it if they changed the name. (The iMac already has name recognition)

ya i do kinda agree there, but they should have other imac nanos or something, lol it just is so different, that was easier with the powermac/powerbook and the ibook/imac back in the day.

Yeah, I wish Apple had never switched from PPC, but even though they did, they should have at least kept the naming scheme, it worked a lot better. (I mean come on, MacBook and MacBook Pro? Way to be original.)

the G3 iMac started the whole prefix "i" naming as it was the best computer to setup and use the "internet" at the time. i guess Apple want to hang on to the name forever as its iconic and they named their music player using the same prefix.

haha i guess there has been the classic. when did the first 'imac' come out? i know the name has a large amount of recognition but there is a time to retire it too. i like the macbook and macbook pro naming scheme, its simple but still distinguishes them easily.

I believe May 8th will be the iMacs 10th Anniversary.

I think they used the "PowerBook" name for about 15 years and "PowerMac" for about 12 years, so the iMac name probably isn't heading for retirement just yet.

MacBook Pro

iMac -------> MacTop (Top for "Desktop")
Mac Mini --> MacTop Air (or MacTop Lite)
Mac Pro ---> MacTop Pro

iPhone
iPod Touch
iPod Nano
iPod Classic
iPod Shuffle

the 'i's are for the handhelds (and softwares), while the 'mac's are for the computers.

Although the "Top" name is stupid, I guess someone can come up with a better word. and that "Lite" sounds like a diet meal a hamburger company has churned out. They're keeping the name at least two syllables (hence iMac) instead of just 'Mac'. So They could do it that way.

P.S. To me, I always think there's a connection between the "Air" with Nike's shoes (basketball) and "Mac" with a hamburger company.

Well, the "i" started with "iMac". Whether it stood for "integrated Mac" or "internet ready Mac" depends on who you ask. "eMac" and all of the other related items were based on "education".

The iMac is already has a big cult status, no need to change it. I like the way it sounds. I also prefer the iBook and the PowerBook, but that's present. And who chooses you need to call it that way. My mother still calls the macbook an iBook.

The iMac is Steve's baby! There's no way he'd rename it. That's the machine that pretty much saved Apple when first announced!
