Here is an observation: It's the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro we expect next week. But we also expect (or hope for) the Air Pods Pro 2. So in the case of the iPhone, the number comes first and then the Pro, but with the Air Pods, it's (expected to be) the other way round. It is clear why that is: You can't launch a product called "Air Pods 2 Pro" when there are already "Air Pods 3" out in the world. People less familiar with the Air Pods product family might misunderstand this.

See also: M1 Pro, M1 Max etc. / M2 Pro, M1 Max etc. Again the number before the Pro.
BUT: If an Apple Watch Pro is launched next week, it not going to be the Apple Watch 8 Pro, but the Apple Watch Pro. The next iteration of such a product would then be the Apple Watch Pro 2.

I know: Good marketing always came before consistency.

Eh... they're on different generations. The standard and the Pro aren't considered part of the same line. "AirPods 2 Pro" would imply that these are the "Pro" versions of the AirPods 2, which have been discontinued and replaced by the AirPods 3.

The Pro is on generation 2, while the standard is on generation 3.
