This feature is pretty killer from what was explained in the keynote. I’ve long wondered if this would come to iPhones and looks like we are finally there. Really excited to see where this goes.

I also found this announcement interesting. But I think it’s best to wait and see how the format is actually implemented and the quality of the files the iPhone 12 Pro generates before calling it a “game changer”. Perhaps it will be everything you envision. Perhaps it won’t. We‘ll be in a better position to comment intelligently in a month or two.

This is a game changer. Critics can no longer say that computational photography is only for amateurs.

It may or may not be a game changer and may or may not change attitudes about computational photography, but what it does do is provide iPhone based image makers more options in post processing. "More options" is a good thing.

I guess to clarify, I'd suggest that for phones, "computational photography" is "the replacement by computational methods effects normally attainable by a combination of lens optics, lens aperture and larger sensor capabilities such as bokeh, depth of field, noise handling and similar attributes". I'm just winging it, but something like that. All digital cameras, large or small, do computations somewhere in the imaging pipeline, they're just different. Think Sony's "Eye AF" for example, that's some serious computation. :) Or in-camera focus stacking, sensor shift, etc.

How much extra storage do you think Apple ProRAW will take in comparison to taking regular photos with the iPhone Pro 12? Wondering if I should get the 12 Pro with 512 GB of storage or if I'm fine with 256 GB.

A lot. RAW files are huge compared to JPEG. The adjustment data added to ProRAW will make them even larger.

Is like 10x the size of a JPEG or 100x? I use Photos app to store my photos under "Optimize iPhone Storage" and have about 60 GB of free storage. Would 60 GB of free storage be good for ProRAW?

I could probably go through my apps and delete some to probably pick up another 10-20 GB. That would give me about 70-80 GB of free storage.

I wound how long before Adobe, PhaseOne, On1, and other software houses support it. There will be a ton of holiday shots made in it.

We don’t know at this point. It’s a new file format. We’ll know more after the phones are released and people have a chance to play with the files. Most likely the files will be larger than JPEGs, but how much larger is unknown. Be patient, we’ll know soon ;).

Heh. Typical Apple. New camera hits the street (iPhone 12) but raw support is still months away.... 😖

Still, it will be a bit interesting. I usually use DNGs out of the iPhone and they work fine. HEIC is a container, and so held depth map info, and that was interesting to edit. Not always that different from traditional masking, but often a lot quicker and easier to adjust. I'd also think the LiDAR could make that info more accurate. Since Lr can use it in HEICs I'm hoping that will continue with ProRaw.

I don't think the raw files will that huge. They'll probably use some sort of compressed sRaw type stuff. Also depends on the bit depth they'll use.

I'm hopeful that they put more robust editing features in the iPad and iPhone Photos app with this rollout. The ability to see the Metadata would be nice.
