Why is no one questioning the fact that all apple products are ''designed in california and assembled in china''?
Since the high prices on many devices and the relevance for american economy in times like this I think that it should be obvious to move all production back to america (of course with easier taxes).
I mean really think about it, they are assembled in a communist country with super low wages.
Apple is one of the reasons for american economy failing, believe it or not but the reason for this is moving production away from the motherland.

As long as the product is shiny, has the apple logo on it, and it was endorsed by Great Dear Leader Steve Jobs, no one will ever question where it was created.

For the same reason why American cars are made in Mexico, Other laptops/computers in China/Taiwan, TVs made in S. Korea.

The cost to manufacture the product in the US at this point would make it so expensive that no one would ever buy the product.

They're one of the few companies that are actually doing well and creating jobs. No layoffs at Apple.

Again, talk to the Unions. Oh, and to the average American worker who wants every possible luxury, all kinds of benefits at work, and they want it NOW.

Because they happen to be great products that are actually made in China.

The American economy is shifting. It's no longer manufacturing/production based. It's all information, design and services.

Well apple is doing well.... overseas.
The most taxes are around the production and all related to the product itself.

It's not only taxes but the salaries. You can hire many Chinese employees for the price of one American employee. If Apple products were made in the US, you could add 50% to the prices, just because of that.

It would take more than government. You'll need to shift the entire American (North American?) cultural mindset when it comes to ownership of property, credit, and purchasing more and more products. Your average workers want houses, cars, the latest HDTVs, you name it. Then they want champagne lifestyles for their kids - soccer, horsey riding, ballet - all kinds bu.llsh to make them feel "empowered" and socially accepted in their "peer group."

Where I live, we pay Postal and Sanitation workers INSANE amounts of money. And they're unionized. Posties have the option of retiring at 50 with one of the sweetest pension plans around.

It isn't just government that needs fixing. It's our massive sense of entitlement. Are you ready to live far more simply, take a lower wage, and sacrifice some benefits? How about buying it only if you can afford it? etc., etc.

You do realize that the Chinese worker wants the same thing and given the explosive growth of the Chinese economy they also are able to purchase such things.

*LTD* I see we actually agree on limiting the size of government! I guess we can agree to disagree on the holiness of Apple.

I've lost count of how many times people love to call out Apple for manufacturing their products in China and at the same time, I see tons of people proudly declaring that they jumped ship to Android devices such as the EVO 4G and the Samsung SGII, freeing themselves from the "chains of Jobs."

Also, look at the BOM for the iPad on a site like iSuppli. A lot of the components are designed by American companies. And if you look closely at the costs, assembly is not really that big of a portion of the total cost. So Apple is actually providing quite a boost to the economy.

Apple has paid out $2.5 billion to app developers over the past three years. And we have barely scratched the surface of what mobile apps can do. Apple has helped the market for mobile apps grow by leaps and bounds. Name another mobile platform whose developers have earned that kind of money.

Another thing that I find funny is that whenever someone feels glad that Apple is #1 in share of profits, people call them stupid, saying that they are "mindless sheep" for being glad about being ripped off. Their argument is that Apple's profitability makes no difference to them as a consumer. That argument goes the other way too. What difference should it make to you as a consumer where Apple's products are manufactured? Clearly, it's easy to root against Goliath. It's a lot harder to have the courage to apply fair and consistent standards.

What company/companies in the US have the production facilities available to meet Apple's needs?

If the jobs move, they'll move to the Chinese hinterlands, to Vietnam, India, and the other low to medium income countries in south Asia. (This is already starting to happen with other industries.) They're not coming back to America.

Apple products have really high build quality, so it is possible to get high quality goods out of China if you squeeze hard enough. The problem is most other outsourcers want the lowest price possible and tolerate terrible quality. So terrible quality and low prices are what they get.

I don't really remember writing that the government should take command, but Apple wouldn't even consider something that makes the cost of the iphone higher even if it helps America.

Trust me, Starting factories in USA with low wages is possible, there are millions of homeless people and so on.
But sometimes Apple is just too greedy..
