Here is the manuscript of a chat I had on the Apple Store website.

Hi, my name is Carlene R. Welcome to Apple!

Hi, I am aware that if you sign up for the unlimited data plan for the iPad by June 7th, you may keep it. However, if I do not need the service and do not pay one month, will I be forced to pay for the 2GB plan

I'm happy to assist with that.

Unless you've set up your account to auto-renew, you lose your eligibility at the end of your billing period--the next time you activate service, you'll be limited to the new plans.

Where is this online chat? I ran across it the other day, but since have not been able to find it.
Sucks that you lose unlimited if you don't order it every month.

Where does it state that you must sign up by the 7th.

I have seen nothing other that you must order by the 7th.

All you have to do is have your iPad ordered and paid for by 11:59pm tonight. Hen you can sign up for it in two weeks when it shows up.

Originally you had to sign up for it by the 7th, but then AT&T changed it to include anyone who had ordered by by the 7th as well.

Stand by for a horde of whingers shortly after midnight.

"My internet stopped working and I couldn't order it " etc.

How do you set it up on auto renew?

Its amazing how Apple employees are still uninformed about things. I stopped in at the Apple store in king of Prussia pa today and asked the guy at the genius bar (bad name) about whether you could stop-start the unlimited plan as long as you sign up before 6/7. He said yes, you can stop and start as you please. I asked him if he was sure and he asked another one of the geniuses who sais the opposite that once you don't renew the plan, you lose the option. Another genius (again, I use e term loosely) chimed in to say that AT&T had put out a press release "a few days ago" to that effect. So, I left the store knowing as much as I did before I walked in. The press release AT&T issued only outlined the plans. There has been no official press release stating the auto-renew-or-lose-unlimited policy. I know, there have been Facebook chats and interviews but no specific information on the website. I assume that at&t's language about the plans probably can be interpreted to mean once you cancel the plan, you can restart any available plan. Of course they won't come out and say specifically that you snooze you lose.

I decided to sign up for the unlimited not because I wanted AT&T to have my $30 but really because I wanted to see how much I would actually use. I don't travel much, so I had planned on getting the unlimited just on occasion since the 250mb would almost certainly not be enough even for a weekend of surfing. What I have determined is that the iPad on 3G SUCKS. It is very slow, much slower than my iPhone. I tried watching something on ABC it sat on the commercial loading for a while. When I finally restarted it, the picture was unwatchable. So, not having unlimited is actually no big deal since you can't comfortably watch any streaming videos on 3G and that's the really data drain

AT&T still sucks though.
