Apple Puts It in Writing: No Exchange Support in MM

Ran into this on the Apple discussion board. Looks like Apple has posted a notice that you can't sync your Outlook on Exchange with MM (duh, we all learned the hard way I guess). Would have been nice to know this earlier. Wonder when they snuck it in there...

"Note: If you use Outlook in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange, only your local contacts and calendars will sync with MobileMe. Any contacts and calendars stored on an Exchange server will not sync with MobileMe."

I'd gladly settle for reliable Outlook support...

I haven't heard of anyone being able to use MM with OL2003, only 2007.

What a steaming pile. Jobs must be sick for this to be happening. He should step up immediately and address the situation publicly. Reminds me of Castro/Cuba late last year.

I wish they would tell up why that is when iTunes can certainly see and sync with this data when connected via cable

When I first read your post, I thought you that meant Jobs must be "unhappy" about this.. now I realize what you probably meant was "Jobs must be ill...."
Eeesh ...... :-o

I guess that is a real possibility -- and if so, who is filling in his position right now? I seem to remember reading that Steve DOES have a "succession plan" in place already -- so I sincerely hope that when it is needed it will go better than this!

They just simply may not have known of some of the 'Inherent Design Characteristics' until we, as a mass user base, started finding the problems.
I think that the public is ending up being the Beta Testers. And that is O.K. for us Trial Users.

You know, you pose another question in my mind. Does Steve have a self-appointed successor? I understand that he left once, and was brought back. Does he own controlling stock in Apple, or is he just a person that is hired to lead the company? In other words, can the Apple Board Of Directors decide when it is time for him to move along? I know that most Apple Users don't want to hear that, but I was just wondering as I'm new to Apple.

Steve does (technically) serve "at the pleasure of the Board," which of course is quite aware of his value to the company... very unlikely that he would be asked to, um, "move along"!
(He certainly does own a lot of Apple stock & options, but that is not why he is important to the Board.)

The reason the suggestion of the OP somewhat shocked me is that I would never have expected a fiasco of this size to occur at Apple even if Jobs WERE ill, or simply on vacation... Apple Inc. has *plenty* of creative, intelligent management besides Steve. So my question (rhetorical, perhaps?) is:
why are they not handling this better???? :-o
 
Sorry, poor choice of words... "ill" would have been better than "sick"

Either way, I wish Steve nothing but the best. I hope he's not ill. It just seems as if Apple is suddenly rudderless... all this backpedaling... shoddy support... still not headed the right direction.

Can someone explain to me why you would think Exchange contacts would sync with MobileMe? Exchange contacts are held on the Exchange server, they're not magically going to appear in your MM account.

Right, I totally agree -- "rudderless" is what is alarming me most...
well, that and the backpedaling...
and the, um, shoddy support..... :-o

So I just want to know who IS "in charge" at the moment -- or at least WHEN Apple is going to be heading in the right direction again!
 
Can't see Steve ever leaving until he drops. Even when he does resign as CEO, he'll still likely stay on the board of directors.

Exchange and MobileMe are two different push email/contacts/calendar services.

When did Apple say that you can use MobileMe to copy everything in an Exchange Server so that both services have the same info? Seems unecessary if you ask me.

I have both setup on my phone. Exchange houses all my business emails/contacts/calendars and MobileMe all the personal stuff. They are seperated externally, but blend well together on my iPhone.

Why not, it is a Cloud after all! : )

But I can understand why we think Exhange contacts would sync to MM. The data file iTunes accesses is an OST file, is local, and also holds sync data to the Exchange server. iTunes can read this data just fine and sync it to the phone just fine over the cable. But for some reason. the MM client on Windows can't - but it can still tell that the information is there and there is some sort of communication between this and MM as people have reported.

And even tho Exchange is most likely meant to operate independenty of MobileMe on the iphone, I can see why some of us would like to merge the two. And it's about keeping Conacts and Calendars in sync between the Cloud, the phone and both home and work computers. It's not about the email.

That is also my current solution and I agree, it does work for me. But in this case, the phone becomes the integrated hub and I would rather the Cloud serve that function.
 
Actually, if my memory serves me correctly, Apple put it in Writing when Steve used the term "Exchange for the Rest of Us" at WWDC. (I'm doublechecking that right now).

The phone is not the hub. There are just two clouds. The mobileme server and the exchange server.

And honestly, with all the problems that MM has been having, it's probably smarter that your business contracts (i.e. typically Exchange) stays as far away from the cloud as possible.
 
mrtune: That's good to know...

I just found out that my (Fortune 100) company plans to roll out iPhone/Exchange support. No date given, but it's on the roadmap. That will likely prompt me to buy an iPhone at that point.

Once I get my business stuff on my phone, syncing/blending personal contacts/appointments from my home Mac ought to be a slam-dunk.
