I agree it's ridiculous.

However, the good thing about getting the 6-core from the refurb store is that the person who did this custom order also probably added on the ATI 5870 card upgrade. So you may get this a a freebie. That's the exact machine I have, and I got it from the refurb store and yup, it included the 5870 even though it won't be listed in the refurb specs. Just FYI.

That's interesting! I noticed you never see any build to order specs in the refurb Mac Pro store.

With the refurb store they list the minimum specs at least you'll receive. But on occasion, you'll get freebies. Like the upgraded vid card I got, etc.

Don't get your hopes up though. Out of all the machines bought on the refurb for me, relatives and friends (close to 20 by now) none have ever had a freebie.

At the online Apple Store I noticed that an Apple refurbished 2010 6core Mac Pro lists for $3149.00 and that a new 2012 6core Mac Pro with more memory lists for $2999.00:

That kind of thing happens. Refurbished prices are often not updated when newer models are released; someone just sets the price for example 15% below the list price (at that time) and then it is never changed. The $3149 is probably cheap compared to what that Mac Pro would have cost in 2010.

If you look at MacBook Air, you often find older models at higher prices than newer models with same or better specs. Same reason.

Well, I'm 1 for 1. :D

Again, if you're buying a custom BTO Hexcore, your chances are MUCH greater than buying anything with a standard config. If it's only available as a BTO, then you have way better chances.
