I tried to return a refurbished iMac to my local store but they couldn't accept it.

The genius checked it out and confirmed it was faulty but I had to arrange for Apple to collect it by courier.

I've never tried myself, but have seen others on these forum report the same thing.

If your Apple store is close, and it's not much hassle, then you can try going there. If not, call Apple to see what they say.

It may also depend on the reason for the return.

Do not return it to the store.

I made this mistake even though I called Apple store before I took my prev. refurbished macbook. Once I arrived, I was told that the refurbished products are not associated with the store.

Call Apple's 1-800 number.

how long do you have to return a new one?
can u just return it whenever and only pay the restocking fee?
will they allow a return and upgrade?

Exactly. However, I seem to recall reading a few posters who have returned refurbs, after opening the box, and having the fee waived as they must have put forth a pretty compelling reason why they didn't feel they should pay the fee (ie... it had a BIG dent on the corner or something). Not saying you should lie, but if you were REALLY surprised by something on this refurb and that is the reason for the return, then it can't hurt to try arguing. If you've just changed your mind due to the recent speedbump/price drops, then you should be subject to the fee. Good luck.

Yes, I called Apple and they said the restocking fee is 10%

Does anyone know if they accept returns for refurbished macs at the apple store now?

The Apple Care rep told me to just return my refurbished iMac to the local apple store, but reading this thread, maybe he was wrong...

UPDATE as of 2-27-12

Just called Apple support. They WILL NOT accept returns at an Apple store for refurbished products (at least in the case of my 15" MBP). Fortunately, they now waive any restocking fee and provide a link to print a free return shipping label...because it's Apple. So good news if your tax return turned out a little differently than you had planned/hoped/demanded. Hope this helps.

I was still within the 14 day return policy period. Not sure what happens outside of that time.
