I bought this refurbished 2015 MacBook Air from one of the highly-rated suppliers online. It has worked perfectly for years. I recently decided to give it to my wife. It seems that, in preparing the MBA for the transfer, entered my Apple ID or PW incorrectly. Apple reported that my computer is now locked, and told me that instructions to unlock it were being sent to my email-address, giving an outline of the address "belonging to me" that Apple would be using. . It resembled no eail-address that I. have ever used. As an. alternative, it asked me as a security-question for my date of birth. It rejected my answer. Where do I go from here ?

It sounds like the computer you bought off eBay may be activation-locked to the previous owner. That happens if the device was stolen or the owner did not properly remove the Apple ID lock. If this is the case, you can’t do anything and Apple won’t help because you are not the original owner and don’t have original proof of purchase.

Thank you, I of course feared as much. However, I have now managed, after rebooting the notebook and going to System Preferences, to get Apple to accept my Appple ID. Is there any route that I could now adopt to achieve the desired result without going down yesterday's blind alley ?
