Hi, I no longer seem to be able to start Front Row. I'm not sure if it's a software issue or if the remote is broken, is there a way for me to test the remote? or start Front Row without the remote?

Can't see a way to reinstall FR without reinstalling the OS.

Any thoughts?

My house!
Did you put different batteries in the remote? Maybe you got some bum batteries shipped with the remote.

Also, released is an update to Front Row (1.0.1). You can download it probably either of the software update built into OS X, or from Apple's website:

Yeah I changed the batteries and ran the update, still no joy though.

Does anyone now how I would go about re-installing Front Row?

Or launching it manually

I don't know about reinstalling the program again but maybe you can check if the Software Restore CDs bundled with your iMac G5...it's somewhere in there but i'm not sure if you can reinstall that program solely...

Anyway, if it really doesn't work anymore after you reinstall, bring it back to Apple...

It's running on a 20" iMac.

I'll call Apple and get them to send me out a new remote.

Thanks for the help.

This response is in reference to the aforementioned post. The following response will assume the following:
[1] You have an iMac G5.
[2] You have a legal copy of FrontRow.

The Apple based remotes are IR remotes. They transmit IR signals.

This is advantageous because cameras, camcorders, and other CCD devices can detect IR signals. To test to see if your remote works, try the following:
[1] Open PhotoBooth
[2] Point your camera into your built-in iSight.
[3] Press a button. Press another.

If you see a light flash, from the top left hand corner of your remote, then your remote is working. If not, it is a software/hardware problem.

You will not be able to see the light with a human eye. Only a camera can see it.

Another possible cause is a syncing problem. You have to program your remote to work with your iMac. To do this, follow the following instructions:
[1] Point your remote 3-4 inches away from the Apple Logo on your iMac.
[2] Press and hold "Menu", and "Next (Fast Forward)" at the same time.
[3] Hold it for five seconds.

On screen, you should see a chain, indiciating the two devices are now paired.

If the above troubleshooting steps did not work for you, contact Apple for a replacement remote, and/or to inspect your IR reciever inside your iMac.

To find Apple Authourised troubleshooting instructions, visit Apple.com, or more specifically:
[1]http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302545 <For pairing your remote>
[2]http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302549 <To test your remote>

**If you are not running the iMac G5 Rev C, then I can not assist you any further.

The iMac G5 Rev C is the only Apple computer that has a IR reciever. You need this device to recieve the remote's signal.

If you have illegally installed Frontrow on other apple hardware, and bought an iPod IR remote, it will not work. Your computer does not have an IR reciever to recieve the signal.

Excellent post thanks!

I didn't know about the Photo Booth thing, I could clearly see the purple light working when I press the remote.

Although I updated to 1.1 via software update I did a manual install via apples website and it's working fine now :)
