I hope i am posting in the right section, forgive me if i sound like i am bashing i am not actually bashing apple, i just thought it was interesting how over 15 people at a public library with macbook or macbook pros all can not play dvds or cds, or at least not the same ones, and i posted this thread asking if it is a OS issue since all these portable mac babes do not all have the same optical drive, if there is a solution or reason for this issue please do tell me, i would rather know their is a fix for all of us with the problem, all 3 of my machines optical drives fail to read brand new commercial dvds or cds., 2 of my machines, both portable do NOT read ay cd or dvds :( at all.

Does everyone else have problems with their Optical drives since upgrading to LEO in general, all my drives seem very picky when it comes to any cd or dvd, at first i read threads of claims it was the brand, then i read claims it was only macbook pros, then only imacs, then only mac pros of a certain era, but all in all it started after upgrading to Leo,

i just went to the Public library to get a few audio cds and my imac ejected 8 out of 10 cds, my macbook pro 17 ejected all of them, the macbook we have also read cds and dvds which the imac and mbp 17 could not read, yet all the cds and dvds work on a old egg imac running Jaguar.,
And the hardware failure finger pointing Saga everywhere goes on, at the Public library about 7 owners of macbook or macbook pros suggested this was going on for ages and apple dodged it under the rug while continuing to sell their machines with cheap faulty optical drives prone to problems, i only got around 7 other mac owners to verify this but it sure sounds like a world wide recall of optical drives coming around the corner, anyone else?

i would list all the details of the machines that can not read average cds or dvds but i just paste the one i am one now for starts

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB

No one should sell faulty parts regardless of the fact that both of us rarely used our optical drives, i sure payed allot for my machines assuming you did as well and WORKED for it, i know that Apple's Discussions Staff removes these types of posts to play down recalls, they did it many times and slandered me as alias users,

EXAMPLE: I had a mac mini war with apple once, they removed all my posts back in 2004, the they did the same thing with several macbook issues, all WHICH WHERE WITHIN MONTHS, RECALLED PARTS!

MacBook and MBP15: Battery exploded, then battery died in minutes, replaced by Apple later via RECALL.

MBP17: Screen died, poor video card apple blamed the developer which was not true because techs warned people they knew that incompatible cards only suggested apple never tests or simply loved the profit from their contracting the developers for parts., Apple replaced the logic board and all.

Mac Mini: Blue Tooth was faulty, wifi was also replaced, 1st generation mm.

List goes on, especially at every library around the world where you can actually walk in and ask several mac users what issues they have, try it.

BTW: Don't take this as a rant, i am not out to bring apple down, its just what we have all put up a fight to get Apple to give back some of the money they STEAL when selling us the cheapest slave labored parts for profit on their side, i am sure like all politics apple will defend its right to scam people because they may as well blame other companies for doing worse, but 2 wrong do not make a right which is a sign of failing on their part of that is the game they play now.

Maybe its just me right, i do have some friends who work right now in the EU support side and i sat wand watched how they dodge as many complaints as possible to bring down the numbers in order to SAVE money on parts they are responsible for replacing, the only thing they offer to charge us for Apple Care (less)., its sick and GREEDY., Apple got away by avoiding several recalls on parts this way and also by adding faulty parts at the end of certain models cycles, we all heard about those., they could care less if they screwed me and you.

But I've never had any issues with CD/DVD's in my MBP 15. I've only used the Snow Leopard install disk for Xcode, Windows XP install disk, and a couple of game disks, though - maybe a few music CD's.

And anyway - I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to rip library CD's.

It's Apple's site. They can remove any thread they want and it is still "fair." There is no free speech in this case, if that is what you expected.

As for why they removed it, I think your post was phrased in a way, purposely or not, to cause panic. You mentioned a "world wide recall" based on only a few machines. You can't possibly know the extent of your issue. If I owned Apple, I would have removed it too. Now, if you posted a thread stating you have this problem, does anyone else, is there a fix, what can I do . . . then the thread may have remained.

In short, you jumped to a conclusion with not nearly enough proof and immediately yelled "recall", which would be borderline for discussing Apple's policies.

My thoughts exactly. It is your job to report the problem; its Apple's job to consider a recall.

Not to mention the thread included at least questionable and at most highly illegal activity... Probably best that it was removed for your sake.

Why do people feel the need to make public threads when they have a problem. Call the manufacturer, and get it sorted out instead of playing victim on the Internet.

Heck, you're playing victim right now by crying foul because your thread got removed! Do some introspection and figure out what is wrong that you need so much attention.

Apple discussion forums are not a public forum, but one that is being paid/supported by apple and being such they have full rights on what is being discussed. They don't like a particular thread, they will delete it. Some people may not like it, but that's life.

No. It isn't fair. But niether is life. And this is Apple we are talking about. Nothing with Apple is fair unless you give them your money. I'm not hating, it's just a sad fact about Apple. They care not unless you've brought a fat wallet with you.

lol nice try, no disrespect but it is as if you can say the same thing about the threads over the wifi dropping out on the iphone 4.

I doubt anyone correct to argue with so many users of these faulty optical drives just because apple gets away with, that all left a bad taste in many peoples mouths, i just want a fair answer to a problem many users are experiencing not a answer like "who uses a optical drive anyway" or "buy a Apple care package", or be put on hold for several hours and when asked to speak louder told they do not have to deal with anyone who speaks loud, someone just told me they experienced that on the phone, worse customer support ever etc :)

As for the thread been removed i was expecting it to happen since so many users are complaining about it, you never see these types of threads last on the Apple discussions site at all, or apple admitting it, they simply post the recall while dodging anyone who asks.

Maybe you're using bad/scratched media.

In any case, whatever complaints exist, Apple manages to sell more Macs every quarter, while consistently enjoying the highest satisfaction ratings in the industry, year after year.

And no, I don't have any problems with my MBP's optical drive. Although it barely gets used these days. When it does, however, it performs just fine, that includes intensive DVD-burning. When I used my old iMac Core Duo's drive a lot, it performed to expectations.

Sorry you're having trouble.

The site is not for complaining but technical support. You violated the terms of service and now you're complaining.

Well said, and I agree completely.

My macbook pro 2.4ghz mid 2007 has had trouble with disks (mainly DVD's) since going to Snow Leopard, it'll take the disk, spin, make a couple of noises and eject it. Or DVD Player will crash.

Have to eject / insert it a few times for it to recognise it... it's not the disk as they don't have any scratches and they work fine in my Work's Lenovo laptop and my dvd players / ps3.

Don't really have a solution for you just wanted to let you know I experience the same thing, the drive does seem to be pretty rubbish to be honest, compared to others.

It was a technical question left un answered, do you know the answer to why so many mac mini, imac macbook and macbook pro owners between 2006 till date are noticing their optical drives failing to read just about any media in some cases.

-Your media is scratched
-Check for dust in the drive
-You need to re install your OS or investigate permissions etc
-Its the brand of media your using
-No its certain Hitachi drives
-wait, its the end cycle of all the broken units, yeah thats it, best time to load them with faulty parts, nice way to punish smart customers who wait at the end of the model's cycle till most problems where ironed out

I am not saying that anyone who disagrees with me supports some kind of online APPLE propaganda scam to cover up any holes either :) just that its seems like a common practice with apples when it comes to recalls, they remove the post when no one has a answer

but maybe it did sound like a rant since i mentioned others complaining as well and gave up on the chase

1) your tendency for hyperbole is ridiculous
2) you draw conclusions without facts
3) you have a non-productive, inflammatory writing style

Wonder why your thread was removed?

There are not oodles of Mac owners with computers "failing to read just about any media in some cases" (does that even make sense?). When I check out optical media from the library to watch/listen to (not rip), I am appalled how that media has bees treated by others. Between the scratches, cracks, dust, and food remnants, even with a preemptive CD/DVD cleaning at home, my dedicated CD component and DVD player have trouble reading them at times. Your Mac may be smart enough to not even try. In any case, if you are putting in a lot of dirty public media, you may have sullied your optical drive. In any case, your experience is not typical of all Mac users'.

Apple are well known for removing posts / entire threads that are critical / complaints.

yes they are notorious for this

also if you look at some of the plays on words at discussion forums you are almost sure Apple's staff or some who accept gifts are boasting apple propaganda, its a good thing wiki leeks and the US goverment are aware and later confronting companies legally if ever in those situations about such deception, but apple is not the only one, EVERYONE is doing it, but 2 wrongs do make make a right any more then Hitler's propaganda which was inspired by Herzl yet no one is allowed to say that in Europe.

Propaganda is lying to corrupt information and present it in ways to influence the public if you ask me.

no one agreed with apple's answer on the discussions over the iphone 4 antenna issues, NO ONE and that was a recall which everyone is unhappy with., yet when this hit the discussion boards users with 6000 posts like yourself accused everyone else of flaring, trolling and double posting and insulted the character of who ever brought it up to get the threads removed.

no where did i try to use proof reading, spell checking, character attacks or attempted to insult anyone, especially an officer in the armed forces, yet you just did all this

That is very hypocritical of him, i would not be surprised if he is all the other users doing like wise.

I redact my prior critique. Your arguments are quite reasonable.

LOL right. Absurdity + Godwin's Law all in one post. Congratulations.

And all of Iraq's WMDs are on Apple's campus in Cupertino, buried under buildings IL-5 and IL-6. Each little warhead has been redesigned from the ground up to be "magical", featuring a little touch-screen with Apps and iTunes Store connectivity so the trained kamikaze monkeys driving the missiles to their target have something to do while in flight.

Holy ****, dude, you'd better alert the NSA, since you've clearly got this thing all figured out.
