Here's how the story went...

My computer was having screen problems so I brought it to the Apple Store and they decided that the logic board needed to be replaced. They went ahead and repaired the computer and after a week I got my Powerbook back. Unfortunately, when I took it home and turned it on, it major screen problems and the whole system would just freeze. The screen went white and began to fade. Here's what the screen looked like:

I went back to the Apple Store the next morning and talked with a genius. Luckily, the genius I spoke to recognized me and remembered that my computer had just been repaired yesterday so he knew something bad had happened. Anyway, I spent 10 minutes trying to get the computer to show the defect which it did. He offered to have it repaired again with another logic board, but I told him that it had already been through 3 logic boards already. At that point, he agreed that 3 logic boards in a little more than a year was too much so he offered to swap my Powerbook for a Macbook Pro:eek:. Of course, I took his offer and...

Now I'm here sitting here typing this with my new 2.16GHz C2D MBP. I like my new computer a lot:cool:. The Apple genius I talked to was really understanding and cool about the situation. Great customer service on his part. Anyway, I just thought you guys would like to hear about this.

Wow, nice. It must have been annoying and driving you crazy to go through 3 logic boards, though. It is good (and almost surprising) that they went out of their way to improve what you had instead of putting the same thing in front of you over and over. Enjoy it! :)

the real beef is that
how is the performance difference?
do you feel any? at all.

i personally think that internally, pb design is more elegant and well made compare to mac book pro. which is badly design and wire up together with messy cheap copper cable.

if i will to pay money, i will wait for a few more changes before i touch them.

nice. you still have old power book? or did you actually swap it out?
no, they took my old powerbook and gave me the macbook pro. hahah after all the trouble it gave me, i can honestly say that i was done with that computer because it wasn't worth the hassle anymore.

i can't really tell you much about the performance difference yet because i haven't really done anything with my mbp. it seems about the same as my powerbook so far, but i've just been using it to browse the internet and what not. i have no idea what the layout is inside the powerbook so i couldn't tell you if it's more elegant or not compared to the mbp.

to mistyz23, it really was a pain to deal with those 3 logic boards because i had to send them in for repair each time. i just thought i had to deal with the same problem too often and the genius thought so too. i'm definitely enjoying my new mbp especially the built-in isight. i've spent too much time toying around with photo booth :D

i feel ya man, same thing happened to me with my MBP 2.0 CD I purchased it last May and I had problems with it till about November repaired 5 times for several different things. Then finally they offered to replace with a 2.33 c2d since i had the 256 graphics card in my 2.0. It would have been dumb to say no. Now my c2d has given me only one problem a slight high pitch when first booted up with the screen brightness ill prob send it it to have it looked at since i just picked a 12" 1.33 powerbook for my travel notbook

That's fantastic. It took them 7+ times and three months of downtime for me until Apple finally caved and just replaced my damn PowerBook. But hey, I'm glad things worked out for you!

Enjoy your new MBP!

I am on 2nd logic board in under a month on my powerbook, applecare after a month finally (I hope) corrected the issues, but if my PB goes for 3, I am going to follow a similar path and push for a MBP. Not as a means to be greedy, but 3 logic boards and all the downtime shipping the PB to texas to fix needs to end.

I hope my PB would not have to get replaced, 'cause I am not ready for an Intel machine yet. Yes, I use a couple of classic apps. Also, Powerpoint is dog-slow running even at native speed, so thanks, Rosetta, but no thanks. By dog-slow I mean when I have to make a poster. PC people fly through their posters, scrolling, pasting and such, whereas my two Macs (iMac G5 and G4 PB) are crawling on the same tasks. I can only imagine what the emulation would do to Intel Macs.

Also, I use S-video output on my PB, so MBP would be no go - I tend to lose adapters and dongles very easily.

Holding on to my obsolete G4 (two logic board replacements so far) for as long as possible...

It's not being greedy. If you value your time, then Apple should give you several macbook pros for all the hassle and downtime. You deserve a new one: you've earned it.

State of Denial
I have the weirdest, sometimes worst luck with my Apple laptop logic boards... iBook 800 needed 3 or 4 replacements (all but the last before Apple started the replacement program). PowerBook 15" needed one replacement 5-6 months after I bought it (stopped recognizing half the RAM, then started KP-ing), which then worked flawlessly until only a few weeks ago.

One thing I will say though: Apple's parts-replacement program has gotten way, way better recently. This time, instead of shipping my computer to Kentucky or Indiana or wherever it was, Apple Retail Walnut Creek had me hang on to the computer (at reduced RAM) until they got in a replacement logic board (apparently there'd been a lot of PB logic board failures recently... they were out of both replacement AND new parts), which took about 5 days. I brought it in, and they repaired it in-store the next day, and I was able to pick it up that evening (though I had to wait a day for unrelated reasons... stupid late trains). A decided improvement.

K, where do you live?

refurb powerbooks on apple seem pretty cheap, cheaper than 2.16GHz core 2 duo at least.

I want a macbook pro :(

I'm in Santa Cruz so which store? And which Genius? Gotta name? :)
i went to the apple store in oakridge mall. the genius that helped me out is named Forrest. He was the cool guy that hooked me up with my mbp.

GeeYou Eye, I also did an in-store logic board repair. unfortunately, it was a bad repair because that's when my computer began to fail. i'm not surprised to hear you say there's been a lot of powebook logic board failures. i don't know what's been going on, but hopefully i won't have the same problems with my mbp as i did with my pb.
