Apple says Intel to supply iPhone processor

It's already a bit outdated (10 days) but I have not read it here this clearly:

FRANKFURT, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Intel (INTC.O: Quote, Profile , Research), the world's biggest chipmaker, will supply the central processing unit (CPU) for Apple's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile , Research) new iPhone, a spokesman for Apple Germany said on Wednesday.

"The processor is from Intel," the spokesman said.

Note that this doesn't mean previous comments about the iPhone using an ARM processor are untrue. ARM Plc. is a UK company who design processor architectures, earning revenue by licensing these designs to third parties. The Intel Xscale processor is a design licensed from ARM.

Apple have an existing relationship with ARM - their processors have powered every iPod.

The Intel Xscale processor is a design licensed from ARM.

Intel sold the Xscale line to Marvell a while back. It is though that perhaps they did this because they could make some variation of the core architecture for embedded devices like the phone.

I still think it will be a Samsung ARM cpu, Apple have a big deal with them over flash ram anyway.
