Hi, I just bought my self an Intel 3.0 dual with 8GB or RAM just to learn a bit of server.
For the moment I don´t plan to do anything "server" related, just to learn from it making configuration and everything I can from it.

I have a doubt related to the power supplies, when I power off the server they continue working, only the fans, I left it for about 20min and they continue working when the server was off.
Is this normal? is this for a cooling reason?

will the fans from the power supply stop eventually or can I just unplug the power cables when I don´t want to used it for a few days?

Thanks all and I apologize for this questions, I really dont know anything about this server.

Thanks

That is normal behaviour, the Xserve may not be powered up, but if you check the ethernet jacks at the back there should be active connections because the Xserve LOM (Lights Out Management) is on and waiting for IPMI commands. It's basically a very small computer that acts as a direct line to the SMC. You can tell the LOM to power up your Xserve, power it down, change its network settings, and setup and modify users with varying degrees of administrative control over the Xserve. It also reports fan speeds, voltages and temperatures from a multitude of sensors throughout the chassis. More info here. It's perfectly safe to unplug the Xserve if you don't need access to these features.
